RIP I was recently watching Foreman-Norton. Usually the phrase is a boxer is on “Queer Street”, but Bob says “Norton is in Queersville”
Colonel Bob is like the "Weird" Al Yankovic of Boxing Announcers...Incessant Foreshadowing on Pre-Recorded Material was His Party Trick...Found a Fairly UNIQUE Niche Within Boxing... RIP Colonel Bob... REED
Never got all the ''he was a crappy announcer'' comments he got. Imo, he was pretty good at creating a lively atmosphere and made most fights more entertaining to watch. Yes he wasn't the type to point out the technical stuff and subtle shifts in tactics but this wasn't his game.
Of course it is about preferences. Imo, boxing doesn't need much 'play-by-play' narration, as the action is clearly visible for anybody. Thus, I have always preferred Barry Tompkins type of style. Sheridan's continuous rambling draws the attention away from the action, instead of increasing it. It almost seems like he attempted to make the announcer the main thing of the whole broadcast, instead of the fight
Exactly the reason I despise Teddy Atlas with his corny boxing analogies. Such an attention whore who loves the sound of his own voice.
Bob Sheridan will always be famous for saying he wasn't gonna talk over Tyson's ringwalk for Spinks, because it was an awesome moment. Proceeds to talk over the whole fucking thing.
Yep, Ryan was great as well. Composed style with expertise and rich vocabulary, and without much shouting
