At 140? If we strictly go by guys who fought at the weight. Imo:

    Napoles beats Pryor

    Whitaker beats Pryor

Carlos Ortiz very possibly beats Pryor.

    A few maybes include:

    Floyd, Pac, and Bud.

I mean, there's not a lot. Pryor beats MOST 140 pounders in history, but I dont think all.

    That night?
I only see a 79 Duran beating him at 140

    Pryor would have gutted Ortiz

I'm an Aaron Pryor fan who simultaneously feels that Pryor can get overrated at times.

    Yeah, Victor Ortiz.

There isn't a single fighter in the history of 130-140 who would have an easy go with a prime Carlos Ortiz. Not even Duran.

Ortiz was naturally bigger and physically stronger than Arguello. He was also a younger, fresher man than Arguello when he won the title at 140. History often forgets that - that Carlos Ortiz won the junior welter title BEFORE he won the lightweight title.

Ortiz vs Pryor would be a close fight.

    sure.
    His career was fire…but short

but for a couple years….he was as good as anyone

    Ortiz is very overrated

I think Whitaker would neutralize Pryor. We saw Pea capable of shutting down literally any kind of style. Whereas Pryor's best two opponents were a (washed up) Cervantes and Arguello - two guys with more or less similar styles. We don't know how well Pryor would do against a genius defensive technician.

I suspect he would have done well against Floyd, but Whitaker was better at shutting down pressure fighters than Floyd.

His resume shits on Pryor's, and he gets nowhere near the mainstream attention of Pryor. He remains underrated, if anything.

Ortiz was one of the most complete fighters who ever lived, and also had one of the highest ring IQs of all time. As I said about Whitaker, Ortiz has a resume which proves he could beat any style.

All of Aaron's career is primarily based JUST off Arguello.

I think Pryor would shine most against the following 140 greats:

    Chavez
    Tszyu
    Taylor
    Locche
    Hatton

A Carlos Ortiz vs Aaron Pryor matchup could ONLY be billed as:

Cervantes might have been at the end of the road, but it still was a great win

Cervantes was way past it. But yes, the fact that Pryor destroyed him in 4 was impressive.

The Cervantes of 6 years prior (no pun intended) would have given Pryor a much tougher challenge. Cervantes' peak was 73-75.

Yup. Add El Radar to the list.

I think Benitez would counter the Hell outta Pryor.

All those guys you mentioned I agree would beat Pryor at 140. I would also add Eddie Perkins. Chavez is 50/50. I think Miguel Cotto would put up a good fight against Pryor although I’m not sure if he beats him.

I wasn't blown away enough by Perkins footage to pick him over Pryor. Excellent technical boxer, but I question him having enough power to keep Pryor off. If you don't have knockout power against Pryor, then you had better be an exceptional boxing talent like Whitaker or Benitez. I didn't see that in Perkins.

I don't have issue calling Pryor-Chavez 50-50. I pick Pryor, but an equal case can be made for JCC.

And Pryor would eat Cotto alive at 140.

Eddie Perkins' style reminds me a lot of Buddy McGirt's style. I wouldn't pick McGirt over Pryor either.

Question I always had was if Pryor had stayed away from drugs, could he have done well at 147?

I think that perkin, hernandez amd peppermint fraser are a bit overrated by connaiseurs now, after being underrated (of not unknown) for so long. Very good fighters, but i dont think they were at the same level than pryor

  25. Xplosive

    Xplosive X-MOD Bad Motherfucker

I've never heard anyone say Hernandez or Peppermint Fraser would beat Pryor.

I mean I could respect a case being made for Locche, but I don't think Locche had enough firepower to keep Aaron off of him.

I was only making a case for Carlos Ortiz, and I think it's a very strong case.

He seemed best suited below 147. He was a top rated guy at 135 as well and probably could have made that weight.

    JCC?? DLH??

I wonder how he would've fared with bigger punchers (I know arguello could crack)

    He was just so hittable.

Feel like he probably does beat FMJ and PW though, seems like once he got going it was all downhill.
