Oscar de la Hoya vs Felix Trinidad - 25 year Anniversary

It’s Oscar’s own fault he lost that fight. He’s almost always been poor in the championship rounds of close fights and it was no different on this night.

From the 8th round on, most of his offense consisted of inaccurate, pitty pat flurries and although Trinidad wasn’t getting a ton done on offense, he was clearly landing the heavier blows and it was enough to keep Oscar from trying to sit down on any real punches.

I can see an argument for a close De La Hoya win on the cards but I don’t see this “robbery” that Oscar and his groupies still cry about till this day. There were alot close rounds and hard to score rounds that could have easily gone either way.

Oscar could have easily accepted a rematch if he felt that strongly about how things went down that night but him choosing to fight Mosley in the summer of 2000 at 147 instead of going with his biggest career pay day at that time in a Trinidad rematch at 154 tells me that Oscar was not all that confident in holding Trinidad off for another 12 rounds.

 

I feel fairly comfortable in going with Tito in a rematch at 154. He was better at that weight than Oscar.

 

I thought DLH won that fight,..but was glad Tito won.

 

Certainly if Oscar went in trying to stand in front of him with that ropey phili shell

 

Definitely gets overrated because of the 6th and 12th rounds. Much of the fight was the two guys standing there and doing nothing. Not some great chess match, but just a whole lot of standing and posing.

 

Yeah, DLH-Quartey was hyped to be the next Leonard-Hearns 1.

No, it didn't live up to Leonard-Benitez either. Two legendary technicians in a chess match.

Oscar just posed for most the fight like the idiot he was, and Ike out-jabbed him but in his typical robotic fashion.

 

De La Hoya vs Quartey was a decent fight. Not a classic by any means. Oscar very fortunate here to get the decision.

 

He'd have killed Oscar at 154.

 

Oscar lost a lot of big fights at 154+. Trinidad simply would have been another of them. A damaged Vargas gave him all sorts of problems until he slowed and lets face it Vargas was never fast, ever.

 

The best version of Oscar at 154(Vargas) just too immobile and simply gets hit way too much to win against 154 Tito. Plus, the Trinidad camp would have been better prepared for his Carl Lewis act.

I see a UD for Tito with a possible late stoppage if Oscar tries to redeem what happened in the first fight.

 

Disagreed with the consensus (though ODlh is pretty hated in here so can't say I'm too surprised). People forget that Trinida, even at his ''peak'' weight, was losing mid fight to mediocre David Reid. Trinidad was a monster if you stayed in front of him but could be neutralized with a good jab and lateral movements. Oscar would always give Trinidad fit imo, wether at 147, 154 or even 160. Sure the higher the weight the better Trinidad's chance but at 154 I think Oscar still manage to win a close one.

 

Hearn-Leonard 1 was quite lackluster too save for a few great moments (including the ending of course). Leonard was mostly stalking and not throwing in a lot if the rounds, yet I don't see anyone claiming it's not a great fight.

True, terrible is a huge overstatement but a lot of the later rounds were lacking in action. Especially from Leonard who seemed gun shy. Still a great fight though and so was Quartey-Delahoya (on a lower level obviously).

 

I thought Leonard-Hearns was a beautiful fight in terms of tactics and ring IQ. It was a classic chess match.
