I know some people think he deserved what he got because he was a mean individual but I think it's sad to see.

    Brutal fucking sport.

Whats crazy is, he's actually doing 100% better compared to say, Pritchard Colon.

Did you watch the Benn fight live? I was too young to have an interest in boxing at that point. McClellans offence was his defence and I think Benn would have always hit him cleanly but the McClellan of the Jackson 1 fight would have got him out of there. He was brain damaged after that fight imo. He was blinking already in the ring after that fight, the same way he was blinking in the Benn fight. Go to the 23.10 mark of this vid to see it.

I watched the Mike Perez vs Abdusalamov fight live on HBO and I check up on that guy sometimes. It looks like he's in the same boat as Colon. We sometimes forget that these guys are taking big risks with their lives when they go in there.

I did not watch it live, no. Not that I was too young. I was still a casual in 95.

I've only ever watched Benn-McCellan maybe like... 3 times. I don't rewatch tragedy fights a lot.

The one I've probably watched the most is Sugar Ramos vs Davey Moore. One of the greatest Featherweight fights ever, which unfortunately ended in Moore's death.

Damn that’s hard to watch but I truly admire how much work his sister is doing to care for him after so many years after that tragic incident. McClellan was a beast in the ring but took far too much punishment and weight cuts that damaged him beyond repair. Just a brutal reminder that you don’t play boxing.

I think McClellan was always frail. He had that blinking problem very early on on his career after a quick KO of some guy. Guy barely brushed him with a shot.

Plus he came in at 166 for Benn. If he was killing himself to make weight it was at 160 not 168.

He messed up the weight cut most likely. Manny had arguments with him about how he was cutting weight. He would leave himself with loads of weight to cut in the last couple of days. Probably just overdid it vs Benn, in a new country etc.

The only time I saw that blinking was after the Jackson 1 fight where he was clearly very concussed in hindsight. He's actually really struggling after the fight but nobody in the ring notices. Then he had 3 one round blowouts and in one of those fights he mentions taking a punch from the opponent in the post fight interview, which may be the fight you're referring to. But just going off the Jackson 1 fight, McClellan was a guy who was using offence as defence. Jackson had no problem tagging him but McClellan just had the chin to take everything. Some rocket launcher type punches landed by Jackson. That's gotta be the fight that did him in. If he wasn't coming into the Benn fight with brain damage, he probably ko's Benn within 2/3 rounds. I also think Benn would have caused him problems if he got out of those rounds because McClellan wasn't hard to hit.

Kronk gym wars probably didn't help. There is footage of McClellan sparring Toney and I thought Toney clowned him a bit. Toney was doing his usual thing of rolling with punches with his hands down and I thought it was pretty impressive for Toney to have the confidence in his game to be doing that, knowing how hard McClellan hits.

I'll have to go watch that fight again. My amateurish recollection of it is that McClellan simply blew the guy out.

Boxing with gloves would be illegal. It's the gloves that do the damage.

    you sick fuck lol

that fight is infuriating to watch with all those rabbit punches, and knowing their future effect…though I suppose one can argue that McClellans current state would have happened eventually regardless of opponent

Well that might be true but you don't have to be anything to know McClellan was a pos.

My suspicion is his own brutalization of animals was done out of a recognition of his own frailties and shortcomings.

You sign up knowing the risks. You do it purely for money. So if one gets hurt it's sad but it's not as sad as some random joe crossing the street and getting hit by reed's wife.

According to an article in The Observer, McClellan participated in dog fighting. McClellan's trainer and family admitted that McClellan was involved with fighting pitbulls, and on one occasion had used tape to bind the jaws of a Labrador shut before allowing his pet pit bull "Deuce" to kill it.

Amimal baiting is the lowest form of fighting animals. It's even more sick in this case, because even a Labrador at 100% can't beat a Pit.

You see baiting a lot with these crazed pitbull owners where the opponent animal is put into a comprised position for the sole purpose of the pit mauling them and looking like a bad ass.

There's videos on the internet of sedated, weak looking striped hyenas being thrown in with a boerball dog and dogo argentinos beating up on declawed, juvenile cougars.

In those cases, I can see the need to handicap the opponent. A prime and vintage cougar or hyena would tear any dog to pieces.

My point was that it's especially reprehensible to handicap a Labrador; that breed of dog isn't known for fighting, and wouldn't be able to beat a pit even at full strength.

I say all that to say: I'm not especially HAPPY about what happened to Gerald. Yet at the same time, I sure as fuck don't see him as some tragic figure.

I always wish that McClellan had fought Toney. Toney woulda beat the fuck outta him just like he did in sparring.
