What are some example of boxers who became much better punchers through the year. The only one I'm thinking out at the moment is Crawford, who seems to have become a much beter puncher through the years, but I'm sure there's much better examples. The shift must have occured during the pro years, so no, Thommy Hearns doesnt count.
Definitely not easy to think of examples, which could be because power is something boxers are born with. Maybe Cotto? I remember when he moved up to 160 he kayoed some guy with one shot which was unlike him. Also, Alvarez possibly? Seems like he's focused more and more on setting up big shots. I'll have to give it more thought. Like I said, not a lot of examples come to mind.
I remember talk about Eleider Alvarez 'becoming' a puncher towards the end of his career. It's likely just because people hadn't quite realised Kovalev's love of booze and lack of love for boxing had deteriorated his durability but he might fit. Does Usyk count? He's obviously put on some mass but it's less than the 200 to 225 that you'd see on his record or at the weigh ins. He's certainly sitting down on his shots more now. Archie Moore was a puncher from the start but as he moved up in weight he obviously started to hit harder, but towards the end of his career he began to believe that it was imperative for a fighter, regardless of skill, to able punch his problems away. If I'm remembering right, it was Ali who he tried to impart knowledge on, something along the lines of "every fighter should be able to bang his way out of trouble". Probably not the best fit. Tyson Fury? Not known for power prior to the first Wilder fight, but by the rematch, Chisora and Whyte fights, he'd certainly added some spark to his shots.
Where was his power vs Madrimov? Dont be fooled by the Spence fight. Errol was damaged goods after the accident. You can clearly see it in his fight vs the Cuban brotha who wobbled him....had him doing the stanky leg. The writing was on the wall.
Nobody ko everyone, unless they faced total bums. And it's not only the Spence fight, Bud has a very long ko streak at ww, against very good, but not elite, opposition
