Now that Canelo basically shut down any chances of a fight between him and Benavidez this will go down as one of those big what if fights. Had they both fought between 2021 - 2025 who would you have favored? Personally I’ve always thought that Benavidez’s more aggressive style would have worked in Canelo’s favor due to his counterpunching expertise. Around 2025 is where I would favor Benavidez due to his size, improvement as a fighter, and Canelo no longer being as good as he was while looking flat against Scull and Crawford.
Benavidez would have always won. Even back in 2019 when he battered Dirrell, that version of him would have whupped Canelo. Canelo fanboys will cry "he's too big for Canelo" but that doesn't tell the full story. Canelo is just not particularly good. Not in a historical sense.
