I was just doing my regular rewatch of Mercer blasting Tommy out and wondered about fights with that similar kind of ending, where a fighter got hit with a brutal punch when the ref should have clearly stepped in, and the fighter was put out cold. Surely the fightbeat boxing connoisseurs can come up with many examples

Emile Griffith-Benny Paret 3 (If REED’s Not Mistaken). Literally, Griffith Beat Paret to Death…

Pernell Whitaker-Diobelys Hurtado. Arthur Mercante Jr was out to lunch. Pea was completely loading up on those left hands, giving Mercante plenty of time to stop it, and he just stood there doing nothing.

Emile Griffith-Benny Paret had the tragic ending, but I think the Williams-Jack ref did a worse job in how slow he was. They were just fortunate in that case that it didn’t end in a tragedy.

Ike was known as one of the meaner fighters of that era, and even he stopped and asked the ref to stop it.

Mercer-Pegues is another one. Not as protracted as the others but the ref letting Mercer throw that last shot is criminal.

I can’t help but get a little laugh out of the little skip motion that Ray does before throwing that final blow.

He got a running start on that one and Pegues couldn't do anything but watch it coming at him.

Fabio Wardley might be a good one where the dude was as close to being out as not. Just eating shots as the ref faffed around.
