Styles make fights and Simon was way too wide open and active for Trinidad not to land on him. Winky is a defensive wizard who can be outscored by activity (see Taylor, and Vargas for reference) which is why Simon won. If Simon did anything besides hide in a shell for 12 rounds, he gets stopped in the 6th. B)
Simon gets hit way too much to beat Trinidad. He was most effective at over-coming boxers and movers, like Rodney Jones or Winky Wright. But against a hard-hitting sharp-shooter like Tito, he wouldn't know what hit him.

It would have been a friggin' great fight and that's all I can say. The key to picking this is Simon's chin because they would have been in the trenches. We just don't know. If Simon could take a shot, he'd be live to win by physically wearing Tito down. If he couldn't, it's a longer better version of the Campas fight. Simon was right on the cusp of a Hopkins fight and may have been a spoiler. His fight with Wright was excellent stuff and a shame that not many have seen it.
Yeah I remember the talks about Simon fighting Hopkins. At that time I actually gave Simon a good shot to beat Hopkins. I was under the impression Hopkins was getting too old for a high activity fighter like Simon, but I suppose we'll never know.
All I know is Simon was good enough to barley, but legit, beat a prime Winky. The winky he beat was better than the one we alkl laud today. Younger, faster, and better integrated on offense/defense.
not sure about that. winky looked at his best when he beat mosley and trinidad. i thought simon beat him, but i think wright would've won the rematch had it taken place in america or europe.

true. But he may have been smarter. Hopkins was a better fighter in 2003 than he was in say, 1996, wouldn't you agree nothing to do with this fight, actually, just a question.
Yeah, I would agree with Hopkins. But Wright has become far more basic, stationary and simple, IMO. He's gotten the cred. now because he beat some decent fighters with huge names. I think the Wright of 1999 beats the Wright of a couple of years ago, easy. I think the opposite with the Hopkins case. He matured as a fighter and added a great deal more. All Wright's done is slow down, IMO.
Hopkins looked like a complete fighter when he beat Allen and Echols in 99. Aside from the first Allen fight, I thought Hopkins looked great since beating Mercado in the rematch.
I dont think Wright was as good when he fought Simon as he became afterwards. He wasnt as up for that fight as he has been for some of his big money fights more recently. As we can see Wright comes in flat at times for guys he doesnt perceive as threats. Harry Simon was a very good fighter, but who had heard of him before the Wright fight. He only had around 15 fights, do you think Winky was highly motivated to face an unknown guy like that? Add the altitude to the fact that Wright wasnt in peak condition, on top of Simons unreal conditioning and you have a close loss which was aided by corruption. Also as Wright began getting big fights in the United States he got even stronger physically. He hired Darryl Hudson and you could see the difference in his strength in the subsequent fights.
