Joe is good when he has someone in there with a fire under them (Diego, Casa) but can be way too nuturing when he has a fighter who needs coaxing (Viloria, Guinn, Mosley). I will say this though he is the best at communicating what they need to do just not the urgency in those types of fighters.

I didn't consider Manny because of late he had been a trainer for hire type guy rather than building fighters from scratch. If guys like Bank and Andy Lee pan out then I might take that perception about him

Who have Roach, Goosen, McGirt or Mayweather Sr. build up from scratch? :dunno: Lots of fighters have no loyalty to their trainers, who know them, and care about them like sons. At the first opportunity they run to the big name trainers, who don´t know them, don´t care and charge 4-5 times the money.

A bit off-topic, I think Jesse Reid is quite underrated as a trainer. He just needs to get another top fighter in his stable who will stay with him long-term. Wasn't Orlando Canizales with him for a long time?

my wording sucks I probably shouldn't have said from scratch as there are probably not many but Freddie has pretty much made Manny Pacquiao the fighter he is today as well as Vazquez (although Vazquez is now going to Justin Fortune now). He is training Vanes who is turning into a fine prospect.

I mentioned Manny only because he would be the only one I would consider among Freddie and Nacho in terms of being consistently good to great. Those you mention I don't consider truely great trainers

Off-topic? I think Reid fits quite appropriately in the 'Other' category.

Makes sense to me... Reid trained Uncle Roger Mayweather who IS on the list of candidates?

I like Roach as a trainer but , Goosen giving the advice in the ring if you know what I mean ...

Roach was too easy on Delahoya in the corner. I think someone like Goosen would have pumped him up more ..

Goosen would have pumped his ass. I don't know. It has to be hard to have a gay guy, rubbing vaseline on you. Goosen is gay and therefore not the best trainer.

It takes years to develop a relationship strong enough between trainer and boxer to really motivate someone like that.

The fact that Ronnie Shields is one of the choices ruins the credibilty of this thread.

I really don't see how Nacho doesn't get the nod. He's the only guy who consistently builds solid fighters. The rest of the guys step in to train made fighters.

Honestly, isn't Hearns the last guy Steward had from start to finish?

Ronnie Shields really improved Dominick Guinn didn't he? Al Mitchell made Vernon Forrest. Willie Savannah laid the foundation for Juan Diaz.

Roach has helped Pacquiao, but other than that I can't think of any other prospects he's really helped...in the past few years he didn't do much for Viloria, Ben Dunne, Vicente Escobedo or Jeff Lacy.

    did he help Lacy?

as for Escobedo I think its more him going from trainer to trainer than Freddie. Dude couldn't decide who he wanted to train him. He went from Goossen to I think Roach then his old trainer in SJ back to Roach then finally with Nacho now

I pick Nacho, but would like to have seen Dan Birmingham's name on the list. I realize there's an "Other" section, but Dan deserves a better fate.

Now that Oscar de la Controversy is at the end of his career, Freddie should be back to full time amongst his crew. If I ever allowed my nephew to box, I'd probably want Freddie or Dan to train him. When Nacho permanently hangs up his manager's hat, I'd be more willing to offer his name as first choice.

Isn't Birmingham the guy who trained Reid in the ams and then in the pros? If so, I thought he did a trash job with Reid.

"Hey look. That handsome man is about to shoot Zach Handscum with a super soaker. I hope it is full of piss."

"Yeah, why is Handscum crying and why are his eyes falling out. Shit, dude. His face is melting off."

"Well, it is probably an improvement."

You're right, I think Jenkins took over after Reid and Mitchell had a falling out, but Mitchell was there at the Olympics so I'd say he was the main guy for most of David Reid's career.
