Now I know boxers can't wear vests and as Double L so eliquently put it: "fighters can't have an antenna up their ass." But there must be a way for some sort of connection to be made so that a punch can register in some fashion! Any ideas? Or are we stuck with Compubox which sucks!
A good start would be some non elderly people keeping count of the punches. Same with boxing judges, lets get some people with working eyes.
Why is it so important? Compubox is for the fans, nothing more. Punch stats have absolutely NO relevance in discussion as to who wins and loses. They have no relevance in professional boxing. All they do is create more things to bitch about.
dsimon writes: I agree, so why not make something that really is useful instead of punch stats which lack credability? Punches do have a big role in the scoring, in a lot of close fights punch stats if they were accurate could be a way to determine who won a fight. I also feel as though just punches don't tell the whole story.
What use do punch stats have? How can they be made 'useful', when they play absolutely ZERO role in pro boxing?
Ahhhh....semantics warriors.... you said zero role in pro boxing...not zero role in pro boxing outcomes... at the very least, they play the role of supporting the conclusion of who won a round or they provide a place for explaining why better numbers in a round are misleading or they provide ammunition for people questioning a judge's scoring...or help demonstrate (or not) how the ever elusive 'defense' could be seen as a factor in the fight...or they keep judges honest because the judge knows punch stats are being kept so it is even more important to be cognisant of what is happening in the ring. Do they have a direct role in determining the outcome of a pro fight? No. They don't even have a direct role in determining the outcome of an amateur fight if you look at it that way, but punchstats most definitely have a role in pro boxing...and it's a pretty important supporting role at times
dsimon writes: You act as though that statement is a foregone conclusion and does not need to be qualified. I am not talking about compubox, but the amount of punches thrown and landed does tend to have some relevance in a boxing match.
punchstats are just for our consumption so it shouldn't really matter if they are accurate or not. In fact, when they are really really off it makes for good debate but other than that nada if you want to effect how a fight is judged then effort should be directed towards the judges of the fight. I have always thought that there should be 5 judges scoring the fight and of those 5, 3 are randomly picked (probably by a numbering system) to be used in the scoring. If that is too pricey to do then reserve that for championship and eliminator bouts.
