it seems like belts dont mean shit once you vacate anyhow. it only counts if you want to break some sort of record, want to bounce back from a loss, or just to get recognition to move on to the next level.

Joel Casamayor is the TRUE lightweight champ. Diaz is a belt holder. Casamayor beat the Champ and now is the Champ.

not really. Corrales didnt even make weight for that fight. he might have won a vacant belt, but at that time Corrales probably wasn't even the best guy at 135.

But he was the champion, meatball. That's how it works.

So? Hatton was the best at 140 (that was Floyd), but he was still THE champ of the division.

You don't have to get in to examples. It's clear as day.

Yes, he is the best Lightweight today BY DEFAULT!!!!! The bum has not taken on Casamayor yet, and never dared to step it up against Castillo or Corrales for the obvious reason. he's a glorified ESPN fighter. Making q quitter quit is not really an achievement. Let him fight the rest of the best or move up and fight a decent champ. Oh wait! Hatton is there, so is Castillo! Better wait a couple of years :flip:

yea fine, casamayor is the real champ. but what difference does it make if a guy is champion but he rarely fights?

the whole concept lineage in boxing doesn't always work and sometime pointless.

at this stage, juan diaz is the man to beat imo.

    by default

He may be the man to beat but he isn't the man. Until he beats Casamayor he is not the champ.

Casamayor rarely fights because HBO and Showtime are both freezing him out.

He wanted to rematch Freitas. HBO said no, Showtime showed no interest in either fighter.

He was willing to give up his title to fight Juan Diaz. HBO and Showtime passed on the fight.

Diaz and Freitas end up facing each other on Showtime.

He's been calling out Julio Diaz for a minute. Diaz doesn't reply.

He agrees to defend against interim champ David Diaz, who instead decides he'd rather face Morales. The WBC strips Casamayor anyway.

Honestly, what more can Casamayor do to pursue a fight? Yes, he's a stinker. But he's also one of the few GENUINELY interested in fighting ANYONE. the problem is nobody else in the division is willing to reciprocate

Casamayor is a stinker and a cheat, but you have to respect his willingness to fight anyone. I also have to root for him by default since he took the title from Chico.

casamayor is one of my favorite fighters, and i agree w/ what you said.

my point is that the whole lineage thing doesnt mean anything anymore.

the whole system of boxing sucks, so i just settle for best fights provided by the networks.

I agree with you that Juan is probably the best guy out there... and I would pick him to beat Casamayor.

    ugggh...Casamayor the 'true' champ?

    Do the lineages support this?

The IBF belt was fucked when Spadafora lost the belt. The WBA when Dorin left at the same time.
The WBO and WBC get unified with Corrales and Freitas.

Corrales stays the lightweight champ when he gets demolished by a 3.5 lb over the limit Castillo.

Corrales passes the lineage when he weighs 4 lbs over the limit to Casamayor? Keep in mind that Corrales wasn't fighting the fight as the lightweight champ in this fight.

Like I said...ugggh. I have to be careful here because I am one of the biggest proponents of lineage and the sanctioning body belts I know, but I have to say that I am reluctant to say the lineage is intact here. And the more I consider it, the less reasonable it seems. That said, I do think it's fair to see Casamayor/Corrales as the 'beginning' of Casamayor's lineage. ugggh again.

    Haymaker;
Mr. Savannah and Main Events wanted the fight with Hatton, and Juan was willing to go to England to fight him.
Juan was offered 300 Grand vs a million and a quarter for Hatton, and that simply was not a realistic offer for the Diaz folks.
I went over all of that in an interview with him here a couple of years ago here if memory serves me correct.
Juan is a true lightweight, while Castillo is not, so that fight won't happen.
I am perhaps the biggest Casamayor fan on fightbeat, as I have been following him for close to twenty years now, but Joel is no drawing card, and from what I hear, he's strapped for cash.
Joel's promoter is not in any position to be calling anyone out, either.
I read today where Juan is going to take a fight before he fights his WBO madatory, WBO Interim Champion Katsidis, and that guy is no punk.
Katsidis will take a fight as well this Summer, so that fight should happen in late fall, and will be a barnburner.

Hey Karl, is there anything to Katsidis fighting Anthony Peterson? I saw that on another sight and dismissed it, but just wondering if you heard anything about it.

Any ideas on who Juan fights before his mandatory? Is it a tune up or more of a challenge, say a another Diaz

Jarhead, I am going to Savannah's next week probably and talk to him, so I'll have more stuff then.
I heard the same rumor about Peterson as well.

Keep on keepin on, Karl. :cheer:

I would love to see Juan clear out another champ before his mandatory with Katsidis.

The title was still on the line for Casamayor since he did make weight. He also beat Diego. Just because Corrales didn't make weight that shouldn't mean that Casamayor isn't fighting for the title. Casa did his part and he won the fight.

katsidis vs diaz would be a war. that's a fight that needs to happen.
