I knew Lennox Lewis was THE TRUTH long before he became world champion. Gary mason had been previously undefeated...and even though he was "slow as fuck" he hit very hard, was very tough, durable and agressive. Lennox toyed with him and battered him into submission. I knew then that lewis would go down in history as one of the best Heavyweight champions.
Hmmm, pretty good thread. Fighters who made an impression on me where I became a fan instantly would be: Lennox Lewis - watching Lewis/Ruddock live on Halloween 1992 on ppv and was amazed at how quickly he blew Ruddock out, became an instant fan. Roy Jones Jr - watching his 1995 fight live against Vinny Pazienza on ppv, saw his incredible speed and skill, very impressive, I had to see more of him. Jumped on the wagon immediately from seeing that fight. Oscar De La Hoya - thought he was just another overhyped pretty boy, didn't become a supporter of his till I saw his fight live on ppv against Ike Quartey. After seeing that, I knew he was for real. Manny Pacquaio - I kept an eye on him from seeing some of his fights on HBO and ppv undercards. The Barrera fight which I saw live on HBO made me a huge fan. I'll name some more when I get a chance.
You gotta be kidding me. Mason was at worst around even with Lewis in that fight and Lenonx basically cheated to win it. And Im a card carrying Lewis fan.
Trinidad - Whitaker fight; before that, I thought he might be over-rated. But when he handled Whitaker so easily I thought he must be special.
Even IF Mason was "even" in rounds with Lewis...it was only even in the sense that Oscar was "even" with Hopkins in their fight. It was basically man against boy and the outcome was never in doubt.
Honestly mate, I just don't agree with you there. Mason was a very underrated heavy and what you say about him was true; he was tough and could punch real hard. But I tend to think of that fight as a real struggle for Lewis...but a testament to his nature as a fighter. People call the guy a pussy, but he fought more punchers than Tyson and Bowe COMBINED.
