Gentleman Jim Corbett was one of my favorites in the "Old Timers" category. I saw the movie "Gentleman Jim" starring Errol Flynn (one of the best boxing movies ever, and Ward Bond was fantastic as John L. Sullivan) on a Saturday afternoon in Houston at the matinee, and it was instrumental in getting me into the sport. Looking forward to the book on the forerunner of modern boxing who preferred to "hit and not be hit" in there. You gotta give the guy credit, he was man enough to take on the heavier and stronger Peter Jackson who scared the daylights out of John L. Sullivan and held the muscular ebony adonis to a hard fought draw. Had Sullivan been champion enough to fight Jackson, Peter would have been the first black heavyweight champion as he would have murdered John L. Karl
Corbett This book is not fanciful like a movie, but very factual, based on the next day local newspaper reports so that you can get the most accurate and complete picture.
Well, Corbett was a glamorous, good looking kind of guy, that is what intrigued him to America. Not a whole lot of men boxed back then, so what's to say those newspapermen knew anything about boxing? Who were they?
New Corbett book The Corbett book is of the same quality and style as my John L. Sullivan book. Massive detail on Corbett's bouts and exhibitions - round by round reports, pre and post fight analysis, details about his opponents where applicable, discussion of legal and social issues that affected the sport. You will get to know Corbett as a fighter. It contains information that you will not find anywhere else. I found the previously unknown dates of many bouts, and as a result, I was able to provide the next day newspaper reports. You won’t be disappointed. they were the same writers who provided sources and background for every piece of literature on that era of fighting. If they arent egit sources in your eyes than by your own doing you only know what unquaified people tell you because you and I and everyone else wasn't alive at the time.
