Undefeated champions who didn't have an "aura of invincibility"

Larry Holmes. Even though he was beating everybody he fought, you never got the feeling that he was invincible, just that he was better than the guy he happened to be fighting that night.

He just recently lost.

Ricky Hatton - Seemed tough enough, but his style just leads you to believe he'll lose to the first top flight boxer he ever faces. Either that or he'll lose an action packed brawl or a fight where the ref enforces the rules.

Rocky Juarez - Even before his first loss he never seemed like a sure thing.

Juan Diaz - He's a slugger with no power and no size. Trust me, he scares no one.

Joe Calzaghe - Seems skilled enough, but the fact that he won't test himself reinforces the theory that he's vulnerable.

Naseem Hamed - Ditto before his first loss. Plus, when this guy was being hyped I just never the saw the kind of dominating skills that were constantly being discussed or being shown by dominating fighters of that time (Mosley, Floyd, RJJ).

 

Disagree with this one. I thought he was pretty invincible...although I was BEGGING him to lose.


Fernando Vargas, Shane Mosley, Oscar De La Hoya, Michael Spinks...all spring to mind.

The more and more his career "progressed" the more it seemed he would eventually get beat, such was the downward spiral as represented by his fights with McCullough, Soto...Paul Ingle..

The best name for this thread is Rocky Marciano...

He always looked beatable, but he always found a way to win.

 

I have to disagree with that.
Marciano was one of the most intimidating fighters that ever stepped into the ring.
It is easy to look back 50 years later and that all that has come after him, but during his time, he was considered quite unbeatable.
The man simply oozed menace in there, and no fighter was ever the same after fighting him for the title, and after fighting him, period.
Marciano was a killer.
How did he look beatable to you?
I really don't have a problem with your pick, I just disagree with it.
Do you mean that he wasn't the hardeest guy in the world to hit and that he cut?
But when he it came to hitting power and absolute relentlessness, the Rock would fight to the death.

 

Kelley was the former champion and much better than Sanchez and Alicea. :nono:

Karl, You're right when you say he was the most relentless, but Old Jersy Joe almost had him beat. Ezzard Charles gave him a tough fight. A few other fighters had close fights with him too. (LaStarza, and one or two others) Of course they didn't win, but I think that's the point of the thread...

Right, so we have guys who were nowhere near as good as a former faded champion that were dropping Hamed. Thanks for making my point. You rock at this shit.
