Have to agree ^^^ Pre-Chapo, I got Camacho by UD in a fast paced chess match. Post-Chapo, Camacho by MD/SD in a dull tactical battle. Stevie was no worse than the 2nd best active lightweight in his day, but had the bad habit of fighting up or down to the level of his competition. As such, Camacho gets to force the pace either way.
I'm not sure. I mean, whoever outboxed Stevie Johnston? When Stevie was beaten, it tended to be when he took his heart and tried to put it on display against a few fighters who were not only bigger, but MUCH stronger than he was. Bazan, Castillo, Lazcano, Harris...he was the aggressor in all of these fights and waged war on the inside for the most part. He was outgunned. But at his absolute best, Stevie was part Whitaker, part Meldrick Taylor, IMO. He could put the punches together as well as jab, move and defend. I understand Camacho was his physical superior. Faster and not by a little either...but there's more to it than that. I think this is a fight that Stevie would take, probably 4 or 5 times out of ten.
Why would Stevie have to "outbox" Camacho? My argument was simply that I find it hard to believe that Camacho would win by outboxing Johnston. Stevie had more gears and wrinkles, even if he was physically at a disadvantage. I think Camacho is ridiculously overrated. He beat who?

Shutting out Ramirez, who was a better fighter than anyone Stevie beat. Who did Stevie beat? His best, and the onky good fighter he ever really beat convincingly was Manfredy. But Camacho woulda absoloutely destroyed Angel. Say what you want about Camacho, but he woulda NEVER lost in his prime to Bazan.
Ramirez? No doubt. That was Camacho's signature win. His only real win where he showed any kind of all-world talent. Camacho woulda destroyed Manfredy? Like he did Haugen? Like he did Rosario? And yeah, he wouldn't have lost to Bazan. Johnston arguably didn't either.
Haugen was better than Manfredy. And Rosario? C'mon, how the hell can you even mention Angel Manfraudy in the same BREATH as Rosario. Camacho woulda bitch slapped Angel and you know it. If anyones overrated its Stevie.

Me either. Not even close, thats a prime example of overrating Stevie. He had nowhere near the reflexes, and defensive skill of Pea, and nowhere near the handspeed and combination punching ability of Taylor. If anything though, he was more comparable to Taylor more so than Pea, though not nearly as gifted as Taylor. They were similar in mentality in that both had speed, and skill, but more times than not made a choice not to box, and to instead brawl. Stevie can be called a southpaw, poor man's version of Taylor, but not his equal.
