Castillo's purse to be withheld! A Nevada Federal Judge today has granted an attachment in favor of Gary Shaw Productions and Diego Corrales’s Estate of up to $1,200,000 of any monies to be paid to Jose Luis Castillo. As a result, Castillo will receive $0 for Saturday's Ricky Hatton fight. Shaw and Corrales sued Castillo after he failed to make weight for their rubber match in June 2006. The case has not come to trial, but boxing attorney Judd Burstein was successful in having Castillo's purse held in escrow pending the resolution of the lawsuit. If I were Castillo, I would pull out the fight right now, Fighting for free? They must be insane.
He could take the "O" of a certain Ricky Hatton, something that Tszyu, Maussa, Collazo Urango etc failed to do, That would be quite a feather in his cap. Thats all the motivation he should need. And he ISN'T fighting for free either, his purse is being withheld to settle some debts he owes to 3rd parties. Thats no different to him being paid and forced to hand it over later.:nono:
i'll give Hatton no credit for beating a clearly unmotivated Castillo who is weakened by this emotionally crippling action ________ HOTELS IN MEXICO
paying what bill? He went through all of that in his last fight, basically fighting for free (or repaying his debt, for the sake of semantics) against Ngoudjo. The lawsuit Shaw filed last year was ridiculous, and even more so that he's still keeping on with it a year later. It was ambulance chasing then, and now exploitation considering he'll hide behind Chico's death and "his kids need our support" when confronted with negative reaction.
Are you saying that the State Athletic Commission has withheld this guys purse on a whim and the word of Gary Shaw alone??? Pull the other one Jake, it has bells on it.
No, it's at all what I said. Not sure how you got that out of my post. I know it's being withheld due to the court ruling; does that make the lawsuit any less ridiculous?
The Courts just don't with-hold monies on a whim Jake, it has to be on the up-and-up. Even if they did manage to withold his cash, they'd have to give it back once it panned out that Shaw was just being litigious. Even at that, If Castillo refuses to fight, he loses the money regardless. The only loser in this is Hatton, who, when he wins, will be told "uhhh you didn't beat the real Castillo" etc etc etc.
Shit, the way he eats, 6 months and a rematch between Calzaghe and Lacy should take care of that. Then they can leave him wherever the fuck they find him. Fat fuck.
It's being held in escrow because the case is ongoing. Personally, I thought it should've been thrown out of court a long time ago, so yes, I'm surprised that the courts are still considering it on the up-and-up. The worst part about all of it is, even if "the Corrales family" wins this lawsuit, they'll be lucky to see even 1/4 of the amount when all is said and done. Judd Burstein will get about $400,000 (or 33% of whatever's the final settlement), the IRS will take their cut, but from the settlement and back-taxes, and Shaw will take his cut and then "donate" to the family.
Imo, the case has very little chance to succeed. It should have zero chance to succeed, but there isn't such a thing as zero chance in the law on almost any and every issue. If Castillo hadn't acted in good faith, the lawsuit would be changed substantially, but as is, it's bullshit.
dsimon writes: I trust your judgment on this one Jake.... I smelled a rat from when I first heard about this one and you confirmed to some extent what I suspected. Horrible situation for Castillo. Very unfair.
& NOW he's Trying to Act like a "Good Samaritan"... BULLSHIT... Yeah,Castillo CHEATED on the Scales Last Year, but he DOESN'T Deserve this... REED:nono:
I honestly hope someone gets shaw for this. What kind of sick fuck would intentionally hold the purse of a boxer's upcoming fight. Shameless bastard. While the greedy fat fuck sits back in his chair, ripping boxers off. Shaw should be forced to fight castillo, and the winner wins the case.
Did Gary Shaw ever pay Castillo his money for knocking Corrales out? Didn't they bet before the second fight?
I'm sure Corrales owed Shaw money. Shaw will take his cut BEFORE passing any funds to Chico's family anyway. Hell, if Shaw DID pay for Chico's funeral, this is his way of recouping his money. Gary's a bigger piece of shit than I thought he was.
The lawsuit won't win so there won't be any money to take. I think it's fucked up they are taking Castillo's money before he even losses the case. Granted once he wins he will get it back but that don't do him much good right now. Oh and as for the suggestion that Castillo should pull out? Ummmm, no he sure as hell shouldn't. Some people should use common sense. Pulling out would be even more detrimental to him.
Totally agree! I know I would in a heart beat. Fighting for free? All them months of hard training only for this to happen?
It's not fair dude! I give Hatton no credit for a win here, This has to be a big distraction for Castillo and his motivation must be in a all-time low. BULLSHIT!
