TACOMA, WA. (July 6, 2007) -- With Floyd Mayweather, Jr. electing to keep his World Boxing Council welterweight title instead of the WBC super welterweight title he won from Oscar De La Hoya in May, former world champions and current top-rated contenders VERNON FORREST (38-2, 28 KOs), from Atlanta, and CARLOS BALDOMIR (43-10-6, 13 KOs), from Argentina will now be fighting for the newly-vacated WBC super welterweight title, Saturday, July 28. http://fightbeat.com/news_details.php?NW=2005
Which is exactly why just being a "champion", by itself, doesn't mean much ni terms of a fighter's standing in a division. Neither of these guys has a significant win at 154 - the closest being Forrest's questionable win over Quartey - yet they're fighting for a vacant title.
SWEET!!!! I just got tickets to this like 5 minutes ago!!! :cheer: Not a huge fan of either, but when world championship boxing comes to yo backyard, you get yo ass there!!!! WHOOOOOO!:blobbox: I'm hoping the styles make a great fight. Carlos just keeps coming forward and its almost tailor made for Vernon's straight rights. I just wonder if Vernon is done. If he is, Carlos will keep the pressure on him all night, similar to what he did to Zab.
I agree with much of what you post about. With all the titles and weight divisions being a champion is more watered down than what it was when Sugar Ray Robinson was the man. But still, even with that said, 99% of professional boxers never get to call themselves a "World Champion". Its something to be proud of no matter what. These guys are getting this shot because they have recognizable names and HBO has a BAD slot to fill.
Nope. BUMdomir is never winning a title again. In Fact, he should never be getting a title shot at 154 anyway, neither should Forrest though.
PBF's best win at 147 (Carlos) is a better win than Margarito's and Cotto's. Mosley's best was Oscar's, aprt from that he's done nothing. Floyd has beaten Oscar also...so it's a wash.
PBF's best win at 147 is Baldomir. No amount of rationalizing on your part can change that unfortunate fact (unfortunate from the stand-point of a PBF nut-hugger such as yourself).
nothing unfortunate about it....that bout gave Floyd the LINEAR and TRUE Welterweight championship of the world to add to his superb collection of achievements in his already illustrious career.
WTF? I never picked Bumlomir in this fight, you must have me confused with someone else. Forrest should win, if he cant beat Bumlomir, he should retire AT ONCE!
I wonder... If this is a good fight, then will either guy get some credit? Well, probably not. It's not like this is a linear belt...and even if it were, Baldomir didn't get credit for that, either. I think this is going to be too slow for my liking, but I think it's a fight that both guys needed at this point in their careers if they're serious about continuing the craft. Adding a belt to the mix isn't a reason to knock it.
