These were Larry Merchant's words from last night after finding out that Arturo announced his retirement.

Even if you think his words are sickly romanticism, or simply pretentious, I think it fits perfectly.

If you're an Arturo Gatti fan, or were ever entertained by his fights, sound off.

Boxing doesn't make very many Arturo Gattis.

sorry. just happens that Gatti is PBF's best win at 140, so it's tough not to think of PBF. plus, along with Baldomir and now Gomez, PBF is one of three guys who recently beat Gatti easily.

Anyways, praise be to Gatti. but he hasn't really been the fighter we know and love since the first Ward fight.

He had a few pretty good wins after that Ward fight.

Gatti showed incredible heart in the last round yesterday. It was like the Gatti of old, but without the incredible comeback.

I'll never forget Gatti, he provided us with some of the most memorable ass whuppings in history. His beautiful beatings against Floyd, Robinson, DLH, Bumlomir, and Gomez will forever stay in my rotation.

I thought it was a rather pedestrian effort by Merchant, he's come up with some better obituaries in the past.

And the problem with the "hour glass" that was Arturo Gatti is HBO kept putting sand back in it...because his career had run its course years ago.

He fought more lower caliber opponent's on HBO than any other fighter in history (a list that includes Reyes Munoz)...that will be his legacy.

    Ass Kicking

Gatti got his ass kicked big time last night, as he had nothing at all in there.
He looked as bad as Ali did against Larry Holmes, a complete shell of himself.
I have to say though, one of the top 5 fights I ever saw was his knockout over Wilson Rodriguez in one of the greatest comebacks ever.
I thought the best Gatti was the younger boxer/puncher version that twice beat Tracy Harris Patterson in terrific fights where they both did everything.
He is enormously popular up north, and I am sure he will have a lucrative career outside of boxing now that he is done with it.
He was certainly one of the most entertaining and popular boxers ever, and that will get him enshrined in Canastota in the IBHOF within the next decade.

Good thing he's retiring after last night, plus he doesn't need to be trying to cover up the gray anymore

I'm glad he lost, and lost brutally.

    For 3 reasons.

    1. He retires NOW.

    2. It shits all over Floyd. Again.

3.It shits all over Floyd. Again Again.

Gatti may not be one of the best fighters of all time, but he was definitely one of the most exciting. And he was one of my favorites.

He'll be remembered for far longer then fighters that were 'better' then he was.

Let's hope he stays retired. And let's hope Evander is paying attention.

i thought gatti looked pretty good in the second and 3rd Ward fights...and he looked good against dorin as well...i actually thought he looked sluggish against leija a bit and certainly looked terrible against floyd, daamgard, and baldomir
