Can someone gimme the scoop on this cat? Never seen him fight before, but I hear good things and see that he's unbeaten and has a high KO %. I WOULD like to see him fight tonight, but I just cant allow myself to order that sham of a main event. Is he the real thing, and can he beat beat Baby back ribs Diaz?
Katsidis is raw as fuck, but very, very, very exciting. He's like Jorge Barrios without the wide swings. Incredibly aggressive, reasonably compact and bull strong. Nobody really knows how well he can take a shot or how he'll hold up over a long fight, because he swarms until the opponent falls and usually thats quick.
Probably not great, simply because Diaz is a lot better than 99% of people think, plus we know about his toughness and stamina. If you're going to beat Katsidis, you'll do it with those two intangibles, IMO because he's going to be very hard to outbox, due to his aggressiveness. Still, hopefully we find out a little more about Katsidis tonight.
Very exciting fighter....absolutely some of the nicest, most crisp short punching you'll see - nice short hooks with both hands and digs to the body. Likes to come right at you; covers up and comes forward to bull his way in and swing away to head and body. Raw in terms of overall technique - and some porous defense - but he occasionally does some crafty things like lean/step back and then counter with a short hook. Often forgets to bob and weave and prefers to pick them off on his shoulders/arms/elbows. His fight with Earl was an absolute war where Katsidis recovered from being badly buzzed via a right-hand counterpunch (if I remember correctly that was the punch) to basically beat on Graham and wear him down until he connected clean to the head and knocked Earl down twice. KO %age is impressive on paper but still a bit unproven; seems to me his punches are more the heavy thudding kind that will wear you down and put you out - though if he can catch you with one of those short hooks right you'll go; problem is his footwork isn't too technical and he doesn't put emphasis on timing so they're a bit easy to see coming. So not explosive, just relentless, heavy-handed and high workrate. That being said, he does have quick hands, a good workrate and punches nicely. His strength seems to be physical strength, stamina, short punching, and relentless pressure. Chin seems to be ok; Earl staggered him badly and isn't known for being a big puncher, but Earl's right hand IS his big weapon and Graham caught Katsidis CLEAN; Michael did not see it coming. Jury's a bit out as Katsidis hasn't fought big punchers that are skilled or close to prime....Ganoy is a big puncher but very unproven and quite mediocre. Fun fighter to watch and will probably make some noise as he is continuing to improve every fight. Peace.
Oh yeah...Diaz-Katsidis would be an absolute war and an awesome fight; but as of right NOW (and Kat is still improving and has alot to prove) I would like Diaz - too much experience, too high of a workrate, and I think he would be able to take what Katsidis dishes out and return fire four-fold, with probably better stamina. Peace.
Yeah, he's almost all offense and no defense. Katsidis has a decent assortment of punches and hits hard, though perhaps not a devastating puncher. A comparison would be John Duddy...though a better version. He doesn't show much in the way of defense, and appears very prone to Miguel Cotto-like instances of complete neglect when he senses his opponent's hurt.
Going way too far at this stage...and I don't think his chin will hold up as well as Mancini's; nor is his footwork as good.
so in other words, it's an absolute disgrace that this guy makes it on the under-card, let alone the fact that he's not fighting anyone good?
Ok. Yo go break down some MM, that section is dead! I'm trying my best to keep it alive but I need help.
It's a disgrace that he is fighting a nobody. It's not a disgrace that he is on the undercard otherwise because he is pretty exciting. It would be better if he was fighting someone at least with a name though.
I like Katsidis as he is a good fighter, a contender with a lot of potential. Hard hitter, very tough and strong, very aggressive and comes to fight. I beleive he and Juan will fight next year depending on who Juan is mandated to fight after he takes care of Julio Diaz in October. I think Katsidis will give Juan a harder fight than Julio Diaz will give Juan, I'll put it that way.
I can believe that. Julio Diaz blows! That guy has been overrated for years. Baby Back Ribs is gonna kick his ass.
I agree. Katsidis will give Juan, or anyone at 135 hell. And I really wouldn't be surprised if Katsidis was the man to beat Juan. He strikes me as being stronger than Juan and obviously the bigger puncher. It's also arguable that he can match, or at least come close to, Juan's workrate. I'd love to see this fight though. Probably one of the 10 best fights that could be made today, and definitely the best in the lightweight division. And I wouldn't question Katsidis' chin based solely on what happened in the Earl fight. The boy got timed perfectly with a shot he didn't see coming while he was loading up on one of his own. That type of punch usually results in a KO, regardless of the fighter throwing the shot not being a devastating puncher. Just ask Vic Darchinyan. ::
nah. if anything, Julio Diaz is under-rated based on his 1st round KO loss. he hits harder than most people think, and has fast hands.
He brings nothing to the table Juan hasnt seen before. I expect Juan to beat him up, maybe even stop him late. Julio Diaz has never impressed me.
He won't match Diaz' workrate, I don't think. Katsidis plays peek-a-boo to cover up then punch - and is much more straightforward...Diaz is no defensive slickster but boxes better and can integrate offense/defense better. And don't sleep on Juan's physical strength - and I think he'll be the bigger man in the ring. As to his chin - agreed, like I said in my post....but in terms of your comparison to Darchinyian - Vic has been buzzed/hurt several times before his KO loss. Peace.
Well, I always viewed the early hype Julio received in the media was a little askew (with Rafael calling him the prospect of the year at one point, and Kellerman talking him up a bit as well prior to his ESPN2 debut), but he's a good fighter. I think "The Kid" is a solid boxer, with pretty good skills and ring intelligence (and he knows how to change distances), though he does have athletic limitations. Julio will have a huge height advantage in this fight...his jab could be a significnat factor if he makes it. I think Juan will find real estate will be harder to come by in this fight than in some previous and that he won't be able to get off as many punches as he is against fighters he can come in and crowd with relative ease, so in that sense, I do think he'll see something he hasn't seen that much of in the past.
Pacheco definitely buzzed him, and I remember seeing Darch buzzed early in 1-2 other fights; can't remember which. Peace.
Darch was a KO waiting to happen. Ashes if you saw him coming up on Fenech fight nights etc you know he NEVER listened to his corner and only tried to load up the one big punch. Katsidis has looked awesome against sub par opposition. He certainly has the potential to be world class but whether that actually eventuates is another story. I hope he does, he seems like a nice kid.
If I saw him coming up on Fenech's nights? I was at a few of those fights, mate. Katsidis is Fenech II.
That fat bastard. I laughed when the ref in Germany told Green and Fenech to pack their shit up and fuck off back to Oz. You fucking people......
You never saw Fenech in Germany at the Green-Beyer fight???  :dunno: Don't know what you're missing.
