Yeah that's the only thing that I can see derailing Bautista. Being the aggressive fighter he is, he could run into something wild from Plodder. But I'm hoping Gerry Penalosa showed Bautista at Wildcard (aka boxing Manilla) that Plodder can't land his power as long as you can keep proper distance and time counters.
Penalosa Got ROBBED when he Fought Ponce...It was Bad Enough that Penalosa was like TWICE As SMALL as Ponce, but he SCHOOLED him as Well... That Fight AND Demetrius Hopkins-Steve Forbes R 2 of THE WORST Decisions of 2007.... They were BOTH on the Barrera-Juanita Manuela Marquez Undercard,Right??? REED::
Yup. That was like the WORST card ever in terms of the judges. Penalosa was rocking Plodder De Leon all over the fucking ring, and you could tell Plodder was getting frustrated by the look on his face. His pony tail was swinging all over the place with well timed counters by a guy HALF his size. Granted Penalosa is was a long reigning champion, but at FLYWEIGHT. :: Then the cards are read and when I hear 120-108, I'm like, this is going to be an outright robbery and no one is going to say anything because Penalosa is almost 40 years old and about to retire anyway. Forbes - Hopkins was just pathetic. Hopkins looked like he wanted to quit in the last rounds. He was getting beat badly to the punch. Yet the judges have a WIDE decision in favor of Demetrius. Even the Barrera-Fagquez scores were horrible (I thought Fagquez pulled it out by 2 points) but one judge had Barrera only winning 2 rounds total! Not to mention that Jay Nady probably fucked the fight up for MAB when MAB had Fagquez totally out, but gave Fagquez extra time to recover from the somewhat late shot on a knockdown he DIDN'T properly call. Damn that was a shitty card in terms of judging and officiating.
I thought De Leon beat Penalosa, yeah the scorecards were ridiculous, but you can't expect to win a fight fighting about 30 seconds per round.
I don't see any irony in you criticizing American and Latin fans for having a limited view of boxing, and in turn you bring up three Filipinos. ::
Most of the American and Latin stars were already mentioned. I'm bringing up three top fighters from Asia. I'm sorry that your feelings were hurt. Roy Jones Jr is cool. :dunno:
I was just trying to be on the safe side. I value our relationship and wouldn't want to endanger it with misunderstandings. :dunno:
You make it sound like its the 80's and 90's all over again You really think the talent pool has improved?
I think it's not as bad as people think if they actually followed the sport from top to bottom. is there less superstars? Shit, yes for sure. is the talent pool crap? Absolutely not, there is a lot of talent in most divisions. Lack of proper promotion is boxing's problem, not lack of talent.
I agree, it has somehow become accepted wisdom that penalosa schooled ponce...I had Ponce winning the first few rounds as penalosa just didn't throw very much, and the last few as Penalosa faded, and he did fade...Penalosa clearly won some of the middle rounds but other than that he simply wasn't active enough, regardless of whether he ended up making de leon run towards the end...It thought it was a 7-5, 8-4 decision in favor of de leon...
Don´t hate, those people value a higher connect percentage with hard damaging punches over sheer volume. For Example: That´s also the reason REED actually had Margarito ahead against Williams.
That's a good point. Ashes had it for Margarito too based on harder punching. Some people judge fights based on effective punching and other's judge it on volume. But no EFFING way was a score of 120-108 valid in favor of Plodder De Leon. The judges that night were horrible in almost every bout!
I had Penalosa drawing with Ponce as well. I'll never score a fight for a dude who lands more punches, if those punches are worthless.
Gerry Penalosa has long been one of my fave fighters....I believe I had Ponce de Leon - Penalosa a draw as well. I agree with Dosta and others - it's not nearly as bad as it's being made out to be; and there is plenty of depth and talent if you broaden your scope in terms of nationalities and weight divisions. Hell, we've gotten some great fights in '06 and '07 with top fighters finally facing each other. Kyowa, Calderon, Niida, Cazares, Nino, Donaire, Narvaez, Wongjongkam, Vazquez, Kameda, Kratingdaengggym, Mijares, Montiel, Castillo, Gorres, Hasegawa, Gonzalez, Sidorenko, Cordoba, R. Marquez, Caballero, Vazquez, Bautista, John, Linares, J.M. Marquez, Soto, Pacquiao, Valero, Guzman, Diaz & Diaz, Campbell, Katsidis, Hatton, Holt, D. Hopkins, Cintron, Williams, Cotto, Mayweather, Mosley, Margarito, Clottey.....keep going all the way up to Light Heavy & Cruiserweight with Dawson, Bell, Mormeck, Jirov (back in the mix), Cunningham, Jones, Maccarinelli, Haye, Adamek, etc. Yes, there is a bit of decline in terms of influx, but that seems to be primarily in the U.S. and is being offset by gains elsewhere. There is plenty of talent in boxing still....sure, focus is swinging back to the mid/light weight classes, but that too is cyclical - and that's where alot of the real talent in boxing has often been anyway, it's not that new. And IMHO, Hops-Wright was intriguing and a pretty good fight. No, it wasn't Corrales-Castillo - but then, who EXPECTED it to be? Both men should still get props - Hops for doing it at 42; Wright for moving up yet again to try. Peace.
I can see it already, Forrest outboxes baldomir - picks up the WBC 154 belt. Then unifies against Spinks.
The only thing you can see derailing Bautista? Come on. I'm a big supporter of the Pinoy lads and I really like Bautista, but he has a fucking suspect beard, defense and punching technique. I understand he's only going to improve, but he needs it. Against a world class fighter, anytime in the next year or so...he's moosh.
Yeah he's been hurt versus his best competition, and personally I think he needs 3 or 4 more fights against solid competition to really be at the level he needs to be, but Plodder De Leon is just horrible. As long as Bautista doesn't take a savage haymaker to the chin, he should easily outbox outland and outpunch De Leon. If near 40 year old, flyweight, Penalosa was able to do it, Bautista could be trained to do it. I don't think that's "too much" wishful thinking on my part.
Boxing period in the US is declining, but in many other countries it is getting stronger as a sport. It is not dying...
