dsimon writes; Apparently they fought as Ammies. Here are the details... don't hold your breath. http://sports.yahoo.com/box/news;_ylt=AgM70zVCggnCaSGwqEfvUaiixLYF?slug=txtaylorpavlik&prov=st&type=lgns
Taylor beat him in the amateurs, and with a lot of room to spare. That said, Pavlik's come a long way since the amateurs, whereas Taylor (even with middleweight hardware and, for the moment, an "0") still fights like one.
didn't Martin Castillo beat Mayweather in the ammys as well? if so then I like his chances against Floyd he has his number
Ammys are BS. It favors pitty pat punchers for points. There are many amateur stars that didn't amount to shit as pros, and vice versa.
I gave Pavlik a 1% chance of beating Taylor, :eeeek: :bears: after carefully assessing these new revelations I now adjust the probability rate to the following figure, 0%. :cheer: Shit yes!,..Taylor wiggles a mean little blue print, in his callus briskered pinCH I see, and his eyebrows, they raiz up and down they duz:crafty:! .
I did,.. your right I did,..shit..*eyes fill with tears*..please delete that post Dympeople,..I'll delete this one simultaneously ok...please..Dympeople...dont let anyone see that, in 10 seconds ok..and I'll delete mine,..please....no one likes to be humiliated like this..try and understand I pray to god you understand....

The ammy fight means as much as Cotto's ammy fights with Kelson Pinto and Abdullaev. I like Pavlik's chances in this one.
It's not a surprise to me that Taylor beat Pavlik. Obiously amateur boxing favors a style like Taylors over a slower puncher like Pavlik. Not so in the pros so we will see what happens.
dsimon writes: Here is what I find interesting: While many people are always ready to look at a fight in the amatuers as a possible indicator of which guy will win... seldom is there a correlation. Most times it just does not matter because as guys mature and change they are a different fighter. Yet people made a point to note this meeting and the irony is that both fighters (Taylor and Pavlik) made a point to emphatically say the meeting meant nothing. It did pique my curiosity that these guys knew each other though. ::
It depends on the circumstances. If you have two guys at roughly the same age and experience levels, ammy fights are relevant. Case in point...Oscar vs Shane and Shane vs Vernon. Everyone who saw those guys fight as amatuers and spar KNEW who the winner of the pro fight would be. On the other hand, when you look at the difference in age and experience between Cotto, Pinto and Abdullaev as ammy's then compared Cotto's maturation as a fighter and a man...the difference was HUGE.
The first two sentences are simply not true. The last sentence tries to imply that amateur success doesn't correlate with pro success. Also, not true.
look at a guy like julian letterlough. a raw guy w/o any amateur fights, but with frightening KO power. imagine if he was a well schooled amateur turned pro. amateur fights might not count when you compare the matchups in the pro ranks, but having an amateur career is critical unless you want to turn pro in your teen years like they do in mexico.
Sorry but the amateurs mean very little. Playing pitty pat boxing for 3 rounds is not anything at all like being a professional who has to fight 12 rounds. If being a great amateur meant so muh then why hasn't Andre Ward progressed any quicker? he's still fighting bums 3 years later.
How did that turn out for him? I also believe Tyrel Biggs beat Tyson in amateurs... While certainly there're examples where a guy who defeated someone in ammys defeated the same guy in pro (Forrest-Mosley), success in amateurs in no way, shape or form guarantees success in pros.
Is it retard hour? Where the hell do I say it guarantees anything? It correlates and the correlation is fairly strong. Yee fucking haw that you can point out that Cotto beat two guys who beat him in the amateurs. I can point out 90 guys he beat in the ams that he also would beat as pros. And there isn't pitty patting going on in the ams at the top levels. Those guys try to hit hard and hit clean to get points. Pitty pat shit just doesn't score when 5 judges are looking from different angles. And this isn't a new observation. It's been true at least since the 92 Olympics.
I can't believe you clowns are discussing Cotto, Pinto and Abdullaev and I addressed that one page one. Newbies! (Including you Valdarver!) ::
The ammy fight will not matter. Nor will Taylor's overrated handspeed. The white boy gonna kick his black, country ass!
