i'd have more respect for Slappy if he took challenges and lost than for his sherade of taking on one no-hoper after another and calling himself great.

if he beats Kessler, he'll have taken a step towards elitehood but i still won't be impressed in the slightest with his resume. and as i already said it will depend on how he wins. if he beats him like he did Starie or Saleem, then no. i won't give him much credit at all.

Lacy gets soundly outboxed by the Prof. Lacy's best punch, the right to the top of the head, is nullified by Nelson's 5'3 height. "Left Hook" misses all night, gasses in the eighth and allows Azumah to pull away in the championship rounds.

Cards read 115-113, 115-113,114-114. Lacy claims he broke a nail in the second, hindering his left hook.

Let's be real now...what has Joe Calzaghe done to be in the Hall of Fame? Beat Mario Veit twice? Dude, his best win is over Jeff Lacy...have you taken a look at Lacy's record lately?

you act like i'm being unreasonable. meanwhile, Calzaghe hasn't fought anyone. and certainly hasn't faced, let alone beaten, the level of competition necessary to be considered elite. and you act like i'm nit-picking.

he also dominated Charles Brewer when he was a top 5 contender. Byron Mitchell was at worst a top 5/6 contender as well. robin reid was also a good fighter at the time calzaghe beat him.

but yea, overall calzaghe's resume isnt that good, but hey, no one bitched at hopkins for staying at 160 and it wasn't until he beat tito where he finally got his dues.

and honestly, who was there for calzaghe to fight? i could only name ottke (fight never happened due to promotional conflicts), hopkins (who priced himself out and fought hakkar instead), glen johnson (i do blame calzaghe for this one), clinton woods (who's not very good) and uh.....that's it.

but whatever, i'll no longer partake in this argument until nov. 3rd.

Charles Brewer, Byron Mitchell and Robin Reid...I rest my case.

This is the same Calzaghe who called out Roy Jones for years, then following Jones' defeat of Ruiz, told a Fightnews.com reporter, "I never really wanted to fight Roy Jones."

Dude, there were plenty of opportunites for him if he had the balls to step up and come to the US or move to another division (remember how he could no longer make 168?). Instead, he chose to stay at super middle and fight guys like Will McIntyre.

And on November 3rd, I think Calzaghe will beat Kessler. And that ain't saying much - unless Kessler goes on to have a great career. Cuz when it's all said and done, Joe Calzaghe's best wins will be over Jeff Lacy and Mikkel Kessler...Lacy's best win was over who? How about Kessler? Exactly.

I don't quite remember. Did you pick "the joke" or Lacy to win?

Kessler has beaten some pretty good fighters. Much better resume than Lacy. People like you have no idea what you are talking about.

Having a better resume than Jeff Lacy means I have no idea what I'm talking about. I get it. At what point did I say Kessler didn't have a better resume?

If Calzaghe retires with wins over Mikkel Kessler, Jeff Lacy & Charles Brewer, how would you rate his career?

You said Kesslers best win was over who after you mentioned the same thing for Lacy. Sure Lacy doesn;t have the greatest resume (didn;t stop him from being a big fav). Kessler on the other hand beat 2 fighter who are top 5 currently (and when he beat them), and another who is/was top 10. Kessler has proven himself very well thus far.

A guy with a 3-0 record? :dunno:  Calzaghe has a lot of B wins as well and some wins over bums. His career will have been pretty damn good if he beats kessler. Although he certainly fought some guys who were complete and utter garbage he also fought his share of B fighters and this will be his 2nd unification.

Fair point on Kessler. As far as Lacy - The hype he carried was so ridiculous, I started doubting my own beliefs. But what we saw that night confirmed that he's just not that good.

I think a win over Kessler is impressive, especially if he does it in impressive fashion. But it doesn't crown his career, it would just be the best name on his dossier. In the era and division he fought in, that's not saying a whole lot. Calzaghe was a good champ but he never dared to be great.

If Calzaghe whips Kessler just like he did Lacy..."Kessler sucks!" "Totally exposed!" "Thats why Calzaghe fought him!"

You guys are nothing if not predictable.

I'm not sure what that means - if your implying that I did that before the Lacy fight, you're mistaken. But I don't have to prove that in order to say - in 2007 - that the Lacy win is overblown. The facts speak for themselves. For someone with such vaunted power, a lot of "almost-good" fighters lasted into the later rounds with him and most won quite a few along the way. Since the loss to Calzaghe, he was almost beaten by Vitaly something or other.

As far as Kessler, I said that would be Calzaghe's best win. Does that make him great? Nah.

Yeah, Vitaly something or other. You know, the guy he fought twice? Or was he a great fighter too?

    Sure.

If barely beating Tsypko makes Lacy elite then hey, I'm wrong. I do not think Calzaghe is a great fighter - I'm further convinced when people point to his domination of Lacy as proof.

Boo-hairy - you basically insinuated Kessler was on Lacy's level, by saying neither of them beat anybody.

You obviously don't really know or care much about Euro boxing, because if Calzaghe wins this fight, he IS a great fighter.

I don't like Kessler much, I don't know why I just don't, and I feel he has become slightly overrated and Calzaghe should be the favourite. But the guy can fight, and has proved to be head and shoulders above the opposition so far, which does include some decent fighters.

Have you even seen Kessler fight? Or did you just look at his record and not recognize most of the European names on there?

I used to be somewhat of a Calzaghe hater, and sure his resume could have been better by now, but he is legitimately undefeated, and amongst his bullshit and injuries he's proved to be a pretty fucking good fighter.

If he wins this fight, then yes he is a great fighter without a doubt, and top 5 P4P.

Mex, I do not believe beating Kessler makes him great. And while it would be Calzaghe's best win, the rest of his resume isn't GREAT. Furthermore, I never said Lacy and Kessler were on par. If I insinuated anything, it was that a victory over either one, or both, doesn't make Calzaghe a great fighter. Ah, fuck it, if he beats the holy crap out of Kessler I'll recant.
