knocked out of the ring, or still in the ring? I'd say he was pretty much completely through the ropes, therefore being out of the ring. As such, I wonder why people insist that Benn was given a long count?
stupidiest rule in boxing, why should you get an avantage ( a 20 seconds count) because your opponent did a good job (knocked you out of the ring).
I feel the same way. Crap rule or not, a fighter has 20 seconds to get back in the ring, the same rule with the WBC and the British boxing board of control. I just find it odd that people say "McLellan should have won by 1st round KO, Benn was given a long count". That's complete bollocks, he had 20 seconds, and took 12 or 13. Make no mistake, that referee was a generally incompetent idiot, but his main offense was letting Benn get away with all those rabbit punches, there was no underhand tactics in the 1st round.
I'll agree with this as long as - if the guy is knocked all the way out of the ring , if he can stand up before 10 even if he is not inside the ring , he will not be counted out. If he must be standing inside the ring , then you have to give him the 20 count. 10 seconds to get up , 10 seconds to climb back into the ring.
As I go to my grave, I believe this is the fight I will think of when reflecting on this sport. Still sad. Gerald was a beast, and was beating the holy hell out of Benn. Benn was out of it I thought
I agree in priniciple, but as inept as Asaro was that night, you'd almost have to believe that Asaro had no intentions of counting past 10 whether or not Benn was getting up. Of course, that would've sparked another controversy altogether - whether or not Benn was entitled to a 20 count. But one that would've kept McClellan fighting, at least 1 fight longer, and as a super middleweight titlist.
I personally belive that Benn was out of the ring so entitled to the 20 sec count. Obviously I wanted Benn to win the fight, but after what happened I would have prefered the ref to have classed Benn as still in the ring and counted him out in the 1st round, then McClellan wouldn't be in the state he is now.
