Apparently Wladimir Klitschko's wanted to get one more fight before the year was out against a name opponent, but HBO is over budget and can't afford to pay Wladimir or a name opponent a purse so he'll hang out until 2008. :eeeek:

I hope this isn't a sign of things to come in boxing; champions under contract to major networks not being able to fight because they are over budget.

Yeah, that's what was reported a while back...I think it basically came down to Calzaghe-Kessler or Klitschko in the fall, but not both.

They obviously made the right choice out of the two (especially if Klitschko was going to be fighting someone like Rahman), but it's certainly not a good thing for the soprt.

Given the match-ups promised for the remaining of 2007, its no real loss, the heavyweights have had a lousy year so far-the spotlight has shifted noticeably to lower weights, even among boxing posters here, the division is rarely discussed in any depth...

F*ck! And Wladimir was going to fight Corrie Sanders in a rematch in that spot. Oh well!

well, i'm probably exaggerating and over-reacting. but ever since his performance against Peter i've liked him less.

i used to like him a lot. a lot more than his brother. but it seems like more and more he's become a stinker. i can't blame him. because his chin isn't the greatest. but that doesn't mean i have to like watching him.

for once I agree. this is the best news in a while. I don't even bother watching that guy fight so hbo showing him just means missing out on real meaningful matchups

The Peter fight was fun to watch and Wlad straight up destroys most guys. What's not to like about that?

    I think it is

I think this could actually be a wake up call to those fighters who think the networks will fork over hand over foot the money they have been used to getting. If they do not have the money to afford another fight with a fighter, as you say, who is the best in boxing's most high profile division then it has to speak volumes as to who they should match him up with in the future rather than feeding us his showcase fights with the Ray Austins of the world

is Wlad allowed to take on a tune up fight on a german broadcast or does HBO strictly prohibit him from fighting anywhere else?

i think i'd rather fight for showtime without a contract if i was a top fighter.

who told you that? that's been HBO's game for 20 years. and it's the explanation for matchups like, PBF/Brusseles, Mosley/Stone, RJJ/Kelley and Taylor/Bunema.

Yeah. HBO's single-handedly made boxing a shittier sport through its practice of "owning" certain fighters.

Its no big deal, its right around the time that he probably was going to fight again anyways. His hand injury plus a small break usually means about 6 mos between fights anyways.

Yeah, I agree. And even if he was going to fight earlier, it's probably better for him to make sure that paw is 100%.

Without the injury, I would say this sucks more, but it's still only a few more months and with the action amongst the other heavies in the meantime, a bigger matchup could develop.

there are no big oponents for him to fight anyway. I only care to see him fight the winner of peter/maskaev next year. It's the best match up and being a unification it means more in the heavyweight division.
