Bautista has no chin, and was lucky twice before, even yesterday the ref gave him a 15 count,...6...7...8...9...a...r...e....u.......ok.... That was easy money.
you would think announcers on home box office would have the professionalism to due a tiny bit of research and pronounce the guys name correctly.
Ponce has the kind of style that only a UFC fan can love. In fact from the moment he came into the ring everything about him reminded me of a UFC fighter. Just the way he moved and looked and everything. Gotta admit he's got tremendous power but his style is Mayorga like. I think Bautista was in over his head from the start, that kid was not ready for Ponce.
What do you mean he wasn't ready for Ponce? You just got done saying that Ponce's style was Mayorga-like, and that only a UFC-lover would like his style (suggesting it lacks all technique). So when exactly would a fighter like Bautista "be ready" for someone whose style is that basic and un-skilled? By your on assesment, he should have been an easy mark for anyone who can box a little bit. Was Bautista going to develope a better chin with a few more fights? Give me a break, he got drilled by a clean right hand, not some looping Rampage Jackson or Ricardo Mayorga shot.
Because he doesn't have the experience. He's just boxing skill and instinct. He didn't have the experience for facing a sloppy guy like that who hits like a truck. The kid basically had false confidence and I just didn't like the look on his face. It's kind of like with Cintron. He knew how to box, and even beat a lot of guys, but to get to the next level he had to go to Kronk gym and learn how to fight.
I understand what you're getting at, but to be honest, I said myself immediately after Bautista-Medina that neither guy reminded me of anyone that should fight for a title any time soon. That said, given Bautista's division, I'm not sure he'd ever be ready for any of the top players. But still, if they were grooming him in the Phillipines to be the next Manny Pacquiao or whatever, then they should've held him back for a year or so, or at least progressively improved his opposition. I mean, Ponce learned the same lesson himself against Caballero a couple of years ago. Bautista went from retreads to a soft undefeated fighter like Medin, against whom he didn't look particularly great, to Ponce. Another year of experience would've helped his cause. No it wouldn't help his chin any, but he wouldn't be so hopelessly overmatched going in, either.
My only point was that you can't bash Ponce in one breath and then give him a veiled compliment in another. Indicating that Ponce is someone for whom you would need a lot of experience to get in with suggests there is something more to him than a crude technique-less style. Vernon Forrest was 35-0 with a solid amateur background and he got rolled by the crude, "UFC style" of Mayorga in 3 rounds. From what I have seen of Ponce and Bautista, that fight would end the same way whether it was the first fight of their careers or their 50th. I just thought Ponce deserved a little more credit for getting rid of a credible (if not top level) guy like Bautista in the fashion he did. Dismissing the win by saying Bautista wasn't ready is far from accurate. Its much more likely that Bautista would not be able to deal with Ponce at any point in their careers.
I agree with you, these guys have technical liabilities but a good number of fighters that appear more skilled to the naked eye never achieved what these guys achieved so I guess they must be doing something in the ring that works and that should translate into a skill they possess. Mayorga and De Leon are (was in the case of Mayorga) world class fighters, no matter how crude they look.
I don't disagree. Ponce deserves a ton of credit for getting Bautista out of there as quick as he did. But you can compliment Ponce for doing what he did while also suggesting that Bautista stood to gain more experience. Medina hurt Bautista a few times in their fight three months ago, and he punches - in fact, fights nothing like Ponce de Leon. As crude as Ponce is, he was still a quantam leap in level of opp for Bautista. I'd have much rather seen Boom Boom face a Top 15 contender, one that's a lot closer to 15 than to Top 5, and also who can punch a bit.
I haven't seen Ponce De Leon - Bautista, but I had seen Ponce-Sod II - and that was simply a PERFECT punch. Straight left hand right down the pike, full weight behind it off the back foot... And most importantly, Sod never saw it coming and moved INTO it, extended behind a punch he threw. You can't ask for a more perfect punch set-up than that....and he never caught Sod with a punch like that in the first fight. Daniel can definitely punch...imagine what he could do if his technique was optimal. You could see the Bautista KO coming before the fight....but I didn't think it'd be over in 1. Peace.
