    Cazares eight pounds over!
WBO minimumweight champion Ivan "Iron Boy" Calderon made 111.5 pounds in the last pre-weigh-in for his August 25th Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum showdown against WBO mini-flyweight Hugo Cazares, who weighed 121 pounds, eight above the 113.4 limit. Cazares (25-3-1, 19 KO's) arrived to Puerto Rico early this morning, said "I apologize because of my weight. I have problems with my flights, delays, and arrived this early morning to Puerto Rico, and couldn't train recently." Meanwhile, Calderón (28-0, 6 KO's) showed even more confidence for the fight after the pre-weigh-in.

    So now what?

I thought only the WBC had these pre-weigh-ins?

This is going to suck if Cazares can't get in line....this is a signficant fight.

What is this limit good for? Is Cazares now punished in any way?? The article mentions nothing so i wonder why having a limit for that shit lol.

Other than that Cazares seems fucked to me... can't train right will be drained as hell - that's not a significant fight anymore in terms of both fighters being at their respective best...

    .....

Who's to say he can't lose it all? He's got the whole week. losing that much weight in 1 week is far from impossible.

I agree but this has to be a advantage for Calderon. How much total weight does he have to lose by the final weigh in?

  18. valdosta

    valdosta Undisputed Champion

13 pounds. it's not like Calderon is going to test his strength anyways. College and high School wrestlers often lose more than 13 pounds in a day. it all depends how hard he has worked to get to 121. It is not impossible for him to make weight.

  19. ILLUMINATI

    ILLUMINATI Roberto Duran

ha..he actually has to lose 14-17 pounds before the fight...i was thinking only 8 pounds..

is the fight at 105 or 108??

I just read some news on Calderon on Primerahora.com and they say this cat is looking much faster than before. They also say he looks in great shape. He understands this Mexican is no joke and will be the best test of his career.

I cant wait for the fight!

    108...it's for Cazares' title.

He's gotta lose 13 lbs. in one week.

No, it's not impossible and it's been done before...but it's the %age you have to look at (losing 13 lbs. at 160 ain't the same as losing it to get to 108).

Depends on how much Cazares usually blows up between fights and what his natural walk-around weight is....

But no matter how slight, this is "good news" for the Calderon camp.

    Peace.

I don't understand why the fight is still happening. The purpose of these 30-day and 7-day pre-fight weighins is to ensure fighters are SAFELY losing weight. That's why they have a 10% limit 30 days out and 5% limit 7 days out. Those were the agreed upon percentages, claiming that weighing any more and having to lose any more than that in such period of time is hazardous to your health.

I'm sure a fine will be involved, and also that Calderon and his people will be entitled to a significant chunk of Cazares' purse. But that doesn't resolve matters. Whatever title Cazares holds (besides the Ring title), they need to step in and act on this, not wait until Friday when a corpse stands in front of them - and still can't make weight.

Agree upon by whom? I thought only the IBF has the 10% fight-day gain-rule and the WBC has the pre-fight weigh-ins. Never heard that the WBO (or WBA) enforce these rules. Besides the fight is in Puerto Rico, right? Every country has it´s own set of rules. The only global boxing rules are 12x3, three judges, and a ref. The rest you make up as you go along.

If this is the case, then:

    - why are the pre-fight weights being reported?
    - why was it even conducted?
    - why is Cazares apologizing for weighing in so heavy, if there's no official limit to meet?

I was under the impression that all of the W's are now following suit in the WBC's rule, and that only the IBF did not enforce it (though they have their own 10% weight-gain rule, as you noted, also which I think the other sanctioning bodies should enforce).

For the record, the Puerto Rico boxing commission ordered the pre-fight weigh-in. According to the WBO, they "had to" do it in conjunction with the ABC.

Calderon doesn't seem to care about the weight difference, so everyone else's take is "Why should we?" We'll see what happens Friday. I'm just curious as to how a grown man can drop 15% of his bodyweight in less than a week and live to tell about it, much less fight the next night.

holy crap - Calderon can only hope Cazares will be seriously weight drained... he doesnt even look soft around the belly at that weight lol...

most strawweights look 2 divisions bigger than Calderon - Cazares looks more like 4-5 bigger
