Don't know how many of you saw the Golden Gloves or Pan Am Games (he won the Gold), but this kid Luis Yanez (106 Flyweight) appears to be the truth.

He's currently competing at the Olympic Trials and it would be a major upset (in my eyes) if he didn't make the squad.

Based on what I've seen of him thus far, I think he's got a real shot at winning a medal in the Olympics then going on to make noise in the Donnybrook favored/preferred Diaperweight divisions.

The current Tajiki champion will batter this kid Yanez inside of two rounds.
The current Belorussian champion would wipe his behind with this kid Yanez inside 2 rounds.
And the current Azerbajani champion will smash him, like a watermelon.

I'm looking forward to seeing how Danny Jacobs fares. I havent seen how everything fell into place yet, but as long as he avoids the kid from Massachusets, he's good. That kid has Jacobs' number.

Yes he's American...mexican-American so you should be THRILLED Double Elian.

He fights in a pro-style and has a very good counter left hook. Plus, he's fundamentally sound.

I also like his attitude. Unlike most ammy's when he knows he's ahead on the scorecards, he doesn't look to run out the clock, he fights.

TWIN's been talking about this kid for a minute, along with Charles Hatley (who unfortunately was stopped in three rounds today). But yeah, I've started following this kid's progress ever since, and he's lived up to the hype and then some.

Of all the noted US amateurs, he's the only one I'd pick without hesitation to not only make the Olympics, but eventually medal.

There's one kid from not-quite around the way, closer to Memphis, Anthony Campbell, from the same hometown as my boys Ira Terry and Marteze and Donnell Logan (though from a "rival" gym). He won his match today, advancing to the 2nd round in the 152 lb. weight class.

Arben - Jacobs fights Dominic Wade later today. I don't know the kid you're referring to, but I don't see any remaining middleweights that come from Massachusetts

I didn't realize that Hatley was stopped today...I saw him lose to Andrade (who seems pretty good) and at the time I thought he (Hatley) was a poor man's Roy Jones. In fact, one of the main things I said about him is that he needs to keep his damn hands up.

Back to Yanez, I like what I've seen this far of the kid and REED is right...Double Elian wouldn't like him because he does have a little flash to his game and he LIKES to fight.

    We've Discussed it,SURE...

But that was Only Contingent on Hatley Being N the FINALS...This is a Double Elimination Tourney if REED's Not Mistaken,so there's Still HOPE...

Yeah but he won the Pan Am games and beat the Cuban along the way...

    Tell the entire story son!!!

YANEZ UPSETS CUBAN TO JOIN DOWNS AND ANDRADE IN SEMIS

(RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL) – Boxing competition moved into quarterfinal action on Sunday at the Pan American Games and three American boxers recorded victories to advance to the semifinal round. Light flyweight Luis Yanez (Duncanville, Texas), welterweight Demetrius Andrade (Providence, R.I.) and light heavyweight Christopher Downs (Fort Carson, Colo.) all earned wins in Sunday’s action.

Yanez has dreamt about avenging a loss to Cuba’s Yampier Hernandez since February, and on Sunday, he accomplished his mission. Yanez won an 11-8 decision over Hernandez to earn a berth in semifinal action18-year-old Yanez opened the action for his U.S. team, facing off in a rematch with Hernandez. The score remained low in the first round with Hernandez taking a slim 2-1 lead after the first. Yanez pulled the bout to a tie early in the second, but after the referee took a point from the American for putting his head down, Hernandez enjoyed a 5-3 lead at the end of the orund. The third round told a similar tale with Yanez pulling the bout to a six-all tie midway through before the referee took a second point for the same offense. Yet Yanez refused to back down, landing two scoring blows later in the round to send the bout into the fourth deadlocked at eight. Yanez controlled the final round of action, taking a 9-8 lead early in the round and holding Hernandez scoreless through all two minutes. He pushed his lead to 11-8 in the final minute and held on to win by the same final margin.

“I feel good, going into the first round, I was just trying to feel him out, but I picked it up in the second through last rounds,†Yanez said. “I was down the second and third round, but I picked up my pace a little bit. I saw that I was winning so I kept boxing, I kept moving around and using my reach. This was one of my goals and I achieved it. My second goal is to win that gold.â€

Yanez’s victory avenges an 11-10 loss to Hernandez at the first Pan American Games qualifier in February. He earned the 11-8 victory despite the four point swing caused by the referee’s warnings.

“The referee affected me, I feel like I wasn’t putting my head down. I felt like I was just trying to slip a punch and he kept pushing my head down, but I feel good about it,†Yanez said. “The thought of getting disqualified was there in the fourth round, but I was more focused on the bout than I was on that. My teammates told me ten seconds left, and I tried to move and I did and I came out a winner

    That's not surprising.

Andrade dropped him with a right hook in the Golden Gloves final but the ref missed the call.

Speaking of which, Andrade lost the Pan Am gold in literally the last 10 seconds of the match.

From What REED is Hearing,Charlie was Stopped ON POINTS...

Obviously,it's NOT a Good Thing to LOSE by Such a Margin that the Ref has to STOP the Fight, but that's BETTER than ACTUALLY Being KO'ed,N REED's Opinion...

All DUE Respect to Demetrius Andrade, who's Obviously 1 HELLUVA Fighter, but REED Feels a LITTLE Better that his Dallas Homey DIDN'T Get STRETCHED or Something like that...

    WHEW!!!!

Yanez won again today, and advances to the finals.

In the winners’ bracket of the light flyweight division, Luis Yanez (Duncanville, Texas) and Diego Hurtado (Reno, Nev.) battled it out in an attempt to make it to the finals. Yanez took a quick 3-0 lead at the end of the first. Scoring six in both the second and third rounds, Yanez held a 15-4 lead at the end of the third. He laid it all out on the table in the fourth round, scoring 11 points and defeating Hurtado 26-6. “Going into the first, I was being patient,â€￾ Yanez said. “I knew he would bring it. I stuck my jab out and I was countering his punches. In the second and third, I started picking it up a little bit. He was getting mad and I started connecting my shots a little sharper over the final two rounds.â€￾

Arben - your boy Sadamm Ali also made it to the finals, beating Jerry Belmontes 32-23.

TWIN - Hatley survived the challengers bracket, scoring a 4th round RSC over Mahlon Kerwick.

JAKE - your boy Anthony Campbell dropped a heartbreaker, scoring even 13-13 but losing on a total punchcount tie breaker by just one punch (28-27)
