Recently, a press release was issued in which Glen Johnson called out the likes of Roy Jones Jr., Bernard Hopkins, Chad Dawson and Clinton Woods. Johnson claimed to be feared and ducked by the division's best. In that piece, Johnson failed to mention one fighter, a boxer whose name he avoids repeating as if it invoked The Candyman: Shaun George. http://www.fightbeat.com/news_details.php?NW=20113
Oh no. I dont see that happening. Judging from where he stands now, I dont see him beating most of the top 175 pounders. What case?
How old is George? he looked decent beating Richard Hall but only if he's a prospect. If not...uh oh. I thought he caught a rape/molestation case - wrong athlete?:dunno:
That's Marshall Kaufmann. George really isn't a prospect anymore. He's not a contender either. He's pretty much in no-man's land. I'm no booster of his or anything. I just talk to him at fights. I've never even done any work with him actually. He's a very nice and well-spoken guy. He would give trouble to alot of guys at light heavy who aren't good movers.
Yeah, I hung out with George at a lounge in Biloxi following Jones-Hanshaw. Good guy - Jones actually singled him out and gave him props for his performance against Hall. I'm just not sure if that's as good as it gets for George.
It is because it didn't happen, Carlos. The kid is broke and is looking for a payday against a contender by fabricating a BS story. IMO he probably needs to get a real job like the rest of us here have.
i was gonna say, his ESPN2 fights alone are probably more than all of Henry's purses combined. I really wouldn't mind seeing this fight. I think Henry wins, mind you, but would still like to see him beat a contender (even a fringe contender), rather than going from no-hopers straight to world class.
It would be a good matchup. I'm not so sure Henry would win though. I just can't see someone with his style beating a mover like George. ESPN doesn' pay very well, but George is like a son to the Duvas. Especially Lou. I'm sure they treat him VERY well...and his clothes sometimes show it! I'm not sure sure if it would be a good idea for Henry to face George, but it would be his most high profile fight. George isn't ranked, which is a real risk for someone in Henry's position, but the WBC light heavyweight division is notorious for moving fighters up fast and high after fighting a bunch of nobodies. It's definately a good style matchup.
Well, I seriously doubt that will happen. Chris should be fighting in an eliminator, or for the WBC title around next spring hopefully. It's one thing to be a mover, and it's an entirely other thing to know what you are doing while moving, George moves straight into his opponent's power side which is a no-no. From what I've seen of him, George is a fragile type. This is really my final word on this matter now.::
When did fighters start having to earn an eliminator fight by beating someone? They pay sanctioning fees to the WBC for regional title bouts and that earns you ranking and eventually eliminators and/or title shots.
ESPN2 budgets are pathetic. I've heard guys get offered <10K for main event matches. Don't underestimate the Casino money. Some Casino's down here operate with at $30K budget for the main event.
thank you, Jake:clap: How are ESPN budgets a joke? They are putting together PPV's or even championship boxing. Most of their main events are prospects against journeymen or something to that sort. Maybe someone on the comeback trail. These fights don't deserve huge cash.:nono:
dsimon writes: :: Karl might be a little peeved because of the rumors of a sparring match. Apparently it is to Chris' advantage to make Henry deny that he sparred with him. That strategy, sometimes called the Lyndon B Johnson* strategy :: It is a little below the belt Sec. You are old enough to remember Johnson's famous epithat: He would start a rumor about some guy he was running against that was obviously not true then laugh and say "make the sonna bitch deny it." ::
ESPN budget has only 15,000. But George has been on it a few times and has also been on small PPVs as well as other shows that have aired on Comcast or whatever that station is called. But George has fought at many casinos as well as fighting once in Russia. Not to mention he is virtually a closer family member to the Duvas that Sweet Pea.
i remember hearing about george when he fought the night before gatti-leija in AC. back then, he was somewhat highly touted due to his unbeaten record and an accomplished amateur background. i've honestly never heard of chris henry until reed and karl started providing some coverage on him. but honestly, if henry is ranked #4 by the WBC, there's no point in fighting george. bobby gunn vs. antonio tarver is a much jucier fight. ::
