By James Slater: Tonight, at the Doncaster Dome, England, defending WBC light-welterweight boxing champion Junior "The Hitter" Witter scored what is arguably his career best performance to date. He knocked out the tough, former WBA champ Vivian Harris in seven exciting rounds - setting up potentially big-money fights for himself in doing so. Witter, a fighter many have labeled as somewhat boring in the past, needed to make a statement and he did just that in dispatching the game Harris. <!-- m -->http://fightbeat.com/news_details.php?NW=20202
this only adds to the judah legacy! even though harris was dead at the weight. he looked horribly vulnerable vs lazcano.
Maussa did it in 7 also, but most believe Harris came in under-prepared....to be honest, it was quite hard to see the difference in Harris between those performances.... to be fair mentally he was probably better prepapred for this fight (i.e. he did not underestimate his opponent) and the fight wasn't fought at a fast enough pace for his stamina to come into question

Agreed. I remember back when Zab was at 140, a few ppl swore that Harris would beat him if they fought. Judging by few getting iced by the poor man's Zab, Judah woulda given Harris the business.
:: I agree. No offense to Jake, but I never thought Harris was anything that special. I thought he was sort fringe world class, which he is I guess. I severely underestimated the shitter, although I didn't think much of Harris, I thought he was clearly better than Witter.
Wow. Granted, I never thought Harris was the best 140lber. but I always thought his frame and power could trouble even the best. I thought even less of Witter. Haven't seen it. Wonder what the f*ck happened.
thats because Viv was regularly keeping Zab on the canvas in the gym. Granted, gym fights and real fights are two different things, but they had a good rivalry for a while - to the point where the gym owner would no longer let them train at or anywhere near the same time.
On paper, no I wouldn't pick Viv. But both are enough of wild cards to where anything could happen. I mean, far lesser punchers than Viv put Zab on his ass. Just a matter of whether or not he could've kept Zab down. But if you started the thread in MM, I'd probably pick Zab by KO one way or another.
Why is he weak minded? Because he lost to a stronger puncher? :dunno: At least he had the guts to face guys not only on their turf, but in their country. He's still 2-1 in those matchups. I wonder how much Viv's weight plays into him getting constantly KO'd though. Manny Steward said he wanted Viv to move to welter so he would be stronger but that Viv didn't want to because he felt he could become a star at 140. Now that that's no longer a possibility I think Viv needs to move up to where he's most comfortable and most effective. He needs to forget about being a star and just concentrate on trying to work his way back into contention. He should also probably pick his opposition very carefully. I think he'd matchup good with Paul Williams.
I haven't seen the Witter fight yet; but I know in the Maussa fight it wasn't just preparation - Vivian immediately discarded boxing vs. Maussa and just started to flail away with wild looping shots trying to trade blow-for-blow with Maussa....which led to him gassing very early and eventually falling to Maussa - due just as much to exhaustion as to him being "hurt." Steward was screaming at him in the corner round after round. I hear that in the Witter fight Viv discarded his jab entirely and was also winging shots.... He just can't seem to stick to the gameplan he needs to give himself a chance. Peace.
I have been wondering that as well....Viv's a pretty big guy at 140, and the strain of making weight will take alot out of you... ESPECIALLY with the type of inactivity and starts/stops he has had in his career. I can't help thinking that going to 147 will help his legs & stamina...which will help his chin. Though I never thought Viv's chin was glass per se - he's usually been dinged by very good punchers and almost always recuperates (I truly think against Maussa exhaustion was as much to blame). I didn't think Witter could knock him out, but he did. So props to Junior! Peace.
It's Witter's best win in the sense that he's getting the most credit for it, but Harris isn't the best guy he's beaten. (I'd say Kotelnik) Witter's rep of being boring is based on one fight. Sure, at the top of the heap he goes the distance, but his next 15 post-zab fights were all KO's and took up a total of 39 rounds. Too bad all 'boring' fighters aren't like this, isn't it?
Kotelnik might be better - but you'll get an argument from quite a few who believe that Witter deserved to lose the fight. He was most certainly a lot more impressive against Harris than against Kotelnik. That's why he gets more credit for it. It'd almost be like calling the DLH fight Trinidad's biggest win (though Witter-Kotelnik was a far less suspect decision). It's true in terms of wins and losses, but a bit deceptive in suggestion.
