Did the way he wrap his gloves affect his punching power. We'd seen fight after fight of him hurting guys with every punch he landed. Then coming off the Joppy fight where he damn near decapitated Joppy, Hopkins makes a complaint about the way he wraps his hands and all of a sudden nothing Tito hits Hopkins with seems to do shit. We all know Hops has a world class chin, but the question stands because Tito's power seemed almost unnatural.
..... Load his gloves with what exactly? The other camps trainer is supposed to be around when guys wrap there hands. Am I supposed to believe that nobody paid attention for all those years? Hopkins and his people made Trinidad rewrap his hands because they didn;t have a representative in there when he was wrapping them. They said it looked like he took a ton of wrap off. The truth is nothing was ever proven. It's just something that some people like to latch onto.
Actually if I remember correctly the complaint was that Tito tried to have tape put directly onto the skin without first using gauze. Don't know what effect that would have but that's what they said.
Cheato Trinidad cheated his fucking arse off. As soon as he stopped cheating, he got exposed for what he really is: a bum.
Naw. Tito is just a great puncher, period. If his wraps were so "deadly", I'm sure he would have been caught years prior to becoming a contender.
Bingo. People....and defeated fighters love to latch on to it. He's been in title fights for years - he's been in the ring with his gloves off (wraps showing); and he fought in all sorts of venues/geographies. There are other boxers who wrapped their hands similarly to Trinidad's - but that was lost under all of the hype generated by Team Hopkins (very smartly; I might add). No, Trinidad did not put tape directly on the skin. The rucus (if there indeed was any) was about Trinidad using a gauze/tape combination on the knuckle area which creates a knuckle pad. Or something similar. Ironically enough, Team Hopkins was originally complaining about Tito's RIGHT hand. There was nothing to this, IMHO. He most certainly did not "load" his gloves with anything. To be honest, yeah I do. I'm no tito hater, he was a damn fun fighter, great to watch, excellent puncher. It was sad to see him go out like that against Winky. But seriously, his punches actually LOOKED different after the wraps had been sussed out. Pre hopkins, they literally looked heavier, like a weight swining round when he threw that left hook etc. I think they found a way of just compressing as much gauze and tape as they could, really compact, making it dense and heavy, as others have stated, almost like plaster of paris. No doubt he could punch, but partly thanks to those uber wraps.
Pre-Hopkins he was also able to find opponent's chins extremely cleanly and often. BTW, note the Cherifi and Mayorga fights in between the Hopkins and Wright fights. Vs. Wright, I have always maintained he mentally gave up and his heart wasn't in it...at all. It showed in his shots. BTW, I seem to remember Trinidad hurting Hopkins to the body around the 5th and 6th and it showing on Hops' face. There were reports of Bernard being "tender" to the body post-fight at conferences and dinners. Remember he was going up against a bigger, faster, stronger guy that he rarely hit clean on the chin. I don't think there is anything to this. Creating a knuckle pad won't take you from solid puncher to KO artist. Peace.
I think it's absurd Tito was once a decent "boxer" he started KO'ing people.. fell in love with power and became a robotic plodder.. Hopkins is just too good to get hit with robotic shit and schooled him.. Winky too!
