I was just talking with Malcolm (Wiggins' trainer) yesterday about this fight. This is a much better fight than Omar Sheika, which was a done deal until they started getting funny with the money. (and one where Donnell had no chance of winning) Jesse should win, but has no business at super middleweight, and quite frankly isn't very good. Not to say that Donnell will somehow morph into a major player, but he's in a better frame of mind than he's been in the past two years. All that said, this fight may very well come down to whoever lands the first hard shot on the chin. Neither guy can take a punch, and both have decent (though not earth-shattering) power.
how is it that alfonso gomez is the only one from season 1 to drop down to 147 while others have gone to 160 and above?
Brinkley seems to have a decent enough chin. I don't know anything about the early ko loss he has, but the ko from Spina was forgivable. I don't know that he's been down in any other fights? Contrast that to Wiggins who has been KO'd almost every time he's had a decent guy in front of him. I'd guess Brinkley gets him even if he lands his punch 2nd or 10th or 20th.
how so? Spina's garbage. I'll concede that the only reason Jesse lost was due to size disadvantage - but the fact that he decided to stay at 168 says that he's kind of stuck in no-mans land. I don't know what Jesse's training sessions are like, but I do know how Donnell's approached things in the past. Show up in the gym for a day or two. Disappear for a month. Show up on fight week, get guarantee of check clearing, reunite with the canvas. He's at least giving himself a chance this time, taking a real training camp, away from home. Again, not guaranteeing that it translates to a win. Just saying that as bad as Brinkley is, an upset is not out of the realm of possibility.
Spina's a really big supermid and he has a decent punch. Brinkley was clearly ahead...gassed a little and got tagged. Bad chin? Perhaps...but not like Wiggins', I'm guessing. I don't have any inside insight as to how Brinkley, or anyone, trains, but that's interesting stuff on Wiggins.
