Golden Boy Purchases Ring Magazine and Others

LOS ANGELES - Sports and Entertainment Publications, LLC, is extremely pleased to announce the acquisition of the following titles from Kappa Publishing Group, Inc.: The Ring magazine, KO, World Boxing and Pro Wrestling Illustrated, which are the leading periodicals in the boxing and wrestling industry. Sports and Entertainment Publications, LLC, is an autonomous member of Golden Boy Enterprises family of companies.
The Ring was founded in 1922 and is known in the industry as “The Bible of Boxing.â€￾ It pioneered the concept of boxing rankings and has been awarding the prestigious Ring championship belt to genuine world champions since then-heavyweight champion Jack Dempsey was the first recipient. Pro Wrestling Illustrated was launched in 1979 by Stanley Weston and is acknowledged as the number one independently published pro wrestling magazine in the world.
“We have a very skilled and capable team at The Ring, headed by Publisher Stu Saks and Editor-in-Chief Nigel Collins, and I have all the confidence that these magazines will not only continue to prosper, but in fact grow globally,â€￾ said Oscar de la Hoya, president of Golden Boy Enterprises. “These magazines will be held in an editorial trust where they will be operating totally independent of any influence from me or others from the Golden Boy Companies as it relates to editorial direction or content.â€￾
“This is the kind of asset you never really own, but rather safeguard for the next generation,â€￾ said Golden Boy Chief Executive Officer Richard Schaefer. “We are proud and honored to be part of this next generation and are mindful of the responsibility trusted upon us.â€￾
“The Ring and Pro Wrestling Illustrated brands are, in our opinion, two of the strongest and most recognized brands in their respective fields,â€￾ said Schaefer. “We are looking forward to being part of the next chapter of these great titles and are very respectful of the deep history of each.â€￾
“Oscar and I would like to thank Nick Karabots and Despina McNulty of Kappa Publishing for giving us this opportunity as well as all fight fans for all they have done for these great magazines during their ownership,â€￾ said Schaefer.
De La Hoya continued, “As a young kid growing up I was always waiting with anticipation to get the new issue of The Ring. To be here now and actually own the title is truly a dream come true. We encourage fight fans, fighters, and promoters to rally together and continue in the impressive resurgence our beloved sport of boxing has experienced this year.â€￾

I wouldn't be surprised if Oscar does jump up a few places in the rankings. He just recently had a close fight with P4P #1 fighter, and one of the greatest fighters of all time. It's only natural if he rises a few dozen spots in the rankings.

You guys are getting bent for no real reason.

Ring is going to stay the same as always.
It wouldn't matter what boxer bought it.

Are you too young to remember the Ring scandal with ABC and Don King?

This has the potential to be WORSE.

I wish PBF bought The Ring, so he could finally be placed in P4P top-3 ranking of all time, instead of the current P4P top-5 place he occupies.

    I agree.
Nobody buys that weak rag because no one that writes there knows anything about boxing.
Not only that, who is going to wait three months to hear what happened when you can get it on the same day on the internet?

    Exactly.
Oscar will have himself rated up there with Robby, Armstrong, Louis, all of them.

that hasn't even been the case from the past staff to this one, and that's while being owned by the same company.

Arnold Joseph heads the actual company that made the purchase. It falls under the Golden Boy Enterprises umbrella. Joseph, for those who don't know, is Bernard Hopkins' advisor/attorney. The Ring already sees very little wrong in Bernard as it is. I don't see them becoming any more objective any time soon.

So you think Oscar is going to manipulate Ring magazine ?

Even after publicly stating the below ?

"These magazines will be held in an editorial trust where they will be operating totally independent of any influence from me or others from the Golden Boy Companies as it relates to editorial direction or content.â€￾
“This is the kind of asset you never really own, but rather safeguard for the next generation,â€￾ said Golden Boy Chief Executive Officer Richard Schaefer.

C'mon man. What do you think he is really gonna do ?

I could care less if its him , PBF , Tyson or whoever.
If its in a trust , its in a trust.

Well i wouldn't say none of those guys don't know anything about boxing. Many of the writers have been following the sport for years and have seen just about every fighter around.

However the second point is true about waiting 3 months to read an article about a fight that's basically old news as far as the internet goes.

The only time i purchase the Mag is when they have a special edition that covers a historical aspect. Some of those issues are good to read again and again.

Why else would he buy a boxing magazine CYC?
Do you honestly think that ring makes enough money for DLH to jump all over it?
Wouldnt shock me if the ring starts charging sanctioning fees in a few years for fights with their belt in it.
Oscar is up to no good here and that quote that you put up wasnt from Oscar but Richard "Dick" Schafer, this is a sad day for boxing.

    CYC

That quote from Richard Schaefer, what do you expect him to say?

"I am really pleased with this acquisition, we'll have a really strong hand in the editorial views of the magazine, and expect both Oscar and Bernard to shoot right up there in the P4P rankings".

    Come on.

As long as they put out nice glossy issues that shine on the News rack and attract new fans to the sport I don't really care who owns it. If it gives them a bit more stability because Oscar owns it that's fine with me.

As somebody already said the news is three months old by the time it hits the stands. Good for the occasional throwback article but not much else. It's for the casual fan, not the hardcore boxing fan anyways.

unreal, but hilarious. At least this should be the END of The Ring rankings matter bullshit some of us have been fighting for several years.

I wish the SOB had bought Flash/Boxing Update and kept it alive. It actually had a purposeful niche within the internet environment.

Even Double L will probably say this sucks.

The Ring has prided itself on its "integrity", and how their rating/championship policy is so great and free of bias.

How are people supposed to believe that when they are OWNED by a large boxing promotional company?

Whatever credibility they gained back from the late 70s scandal, it's going back down the drain.

more like Walmart. Other people's shitty products not their own

what I expect to see in the NEW Ring:

"IS IT BARRERA, JUAREZ, OR GUZMAN WHO IS THE BEST AT 130?"

"OSCAR: PAVING THE ROAD TO BE THE G.O.A.T"

"HOPKINS IS A NICE GUY....NO REALLY"

I said this elsewhere but it seems like they are really trying to use the model Dana White set in motion only while White has rewarded MMA fans with TUF, free UFC cards, and consistent quality matchups Golden Mafia has done none of that.

they will run this sport into the ground but if they make a profit they will tell us why they are good for the sport

    fuck them
