Promoter Frank Warren believes that Joe Calzaghe's super-fight against rival Mikkel Kessler on November 3rd at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium is on course to break the indoor attendance record for a boxing event. http://fightbeat.com/news_details.php?NW=20320
Honestly, I doubt the start time has anything to do with HBO, but rather the fact Calzaghe fought exceptionally well against Lacy and has experience with teh late start time unlike Kessler. They are simply looking for an advantage for Calzaghe.
And what is the record from 1978??? Is everybody suposed to know this??? Why is THIS number not included in the article? What kind of shitty amateurish journalism is that??? :nono: :: :kick:
this is a mega fight. they want the american audience to watch it live. look at hatton-tszyu, klitschko-byrd II. these title fights were televised live for a reason. no one really cared to see calzage-bika.
Klitschko/Byrd wasn´t delayed though. :blobbox: They made the fight before they had a US-TV deal in place, so of course Warren wants the extra cash now, but it´s also an small advantage for Calzaghe, who successfully trained and stayed sharp for a late fight. I don´t think Warren gives a sh*t about the US audience, when he doesn´t give a sh*t about the UK audience.
that's what i meant. tszyu-hatton was shown live as well. if it's a significant fight, then they're gonna show it live.
the record for an indoor fight is 16,000 i think and i think Chavez Whittaker beat that in the Alamadome
Chavez-Whitaker was somewhere around 63,000. I forget the number for Ali-Spinks II, but it was somewhere in that vicinity. Chavez-Whitaker either barely beat it or just missed it, though i do know that they are #1 and 2 for indoor attendance.
If they DO break it... Wow, what a huge signal that things are changing in boxing in a major way. Of course, hardcore fans could already see this coming.
This SHOULD be true, but according to the fightnews poll, this fight is solidly in 4th place (14%) behind pacq barr 2 (25%), May Hatton (28%), and Cotto Mosley (33%) as to which fight is being looked forward to the most. Incidentally, I voted for the Calz fight and would have it and the Mayweather fight way, way ahead of the other two. Oh well.
From www.alamobowl.com it's 58,891. The South Texas Billy Graham Crusade owns two of the top four all-time Alamodome crowds. On April 6, 1997, the Crusade (a free event) attracted 66,835 people and 65,280 on April 5, 1997. Other top crowds include the WWF Royal Rumble in 1997 (60,525) and the Julio Cesar Chavez-Pernell Whitaker boxing match in 1993 (58,891).
damn, that's interesting. thanks for posting it. I always went by the numbers announced on the Showtime PPV broadcast (also reflected as such on Chavez' website and in random Don King press releases).
