Why does Oscar keep ducking Winky so much?

I just saw his last interview on the Hatton/Floyd conference. When asked about Winky willing to come down to 147 to meet him Oscar said "that fight will never happen" he was asked why? he repeated that quote again saying it will never happen.

I remember when Oscar was still with ARum that ARum told Winky he would never fight Oscar because he wasn't a draw and nobody knew him. Obviously that is no longer the case.

I know Winky is still a stye proble for anybody. I just feel he is the one guy Oscar should have fought that he hasn't fough around his weight class. He ducked him when they were both champions at 154 and Winky has beaten the fighters that beaten Oscar.

I know Oscar has taken on alot of big challenges but it just seems like he maded up his mind along time ago not to ever face Winky.:eeeek:

Regardless of his resume it makes Oscar look like a punk to flat out say Never!:dunno:

nobody is questioning his resume. I'm questioning his reasons not to fight Winky before he retires.

It used to be that Winky was a nobody and had not beaten anybody. At least he and arum used that excuse back then.

What's the excuse now? Look at all the big names in Oscar's resume

    VArgas
    Tito
    Hopkins
    Mosley (twice)

all of them fought Winky so why not Oscar? I always figured they would fight at some point in their careers.

To hear Oscar now still say he will never fight him it's clearly ducking. who cares who Oscar fought before. I don't care if he just fought Floyd, the point is he is still avoiding Winky at all costs. That is obvious.

I wonder if WInk can even make 154 now, let alone WW

I'm sure Oscar himself would tell you that he can't beat Winky Wright.

seriously. i betcha ODH would say straight out, i ain't fightin Winky - can't beat him. why should I?

ODH would win some early rounds though, maybe be ahead after 6, but he'd get run over after that. and he knows it.

who the hell cares to see this fight? i like winky and i cant blame him for wanting a payday, but he's asking for something that's never gonna happen.

first off, winky's not known to be an exciting fighter. secondly, oscar has zero chance of winning and probably won't win more than 2 rounds.

third, winky can't even make 154 let alone 147.

if you were oscar, what would you pick between these two:

    1. fight winky, get dominated and beat up for 12 rounds
    2. fight a stiff to make easy cash, then wait for the cotto-mosley or floyd-hatton winner where he stands a more realistic chance of winning or at least being competitive with. oh, and he'll also make more $ fighting any of the four than against winky.

winky should hope for mayorga to beat vargas so he can fight him next. other than that, it's the winner of taylor-pavlik at 168.

    I agree
Yeah , why is this even being discussed at this point. :dunno:

IMO if this fight happend a long time ago , I say its a toss up with a slight edge going in Winky's favor.

However this fight now is meaningless. It's also clear Winky loves to eat.
The guys pigs out on dounuts and shit.
He could never make 147 - NEVER. If he did , I would pick Oscar to KO a completey weight drained , no stamina Winky.
I don't even think Wink could make 154 anymore.

Oscar has fought enough people to not look like a punk for not fighting Winky.
Talk of this fight is just ridiculous at this point.

I think if Wink made himself get down to 147 at this point, Oscar would KO him because Wink would be so fucked up from the weight drain.
This would be like Oscar trying to fight at 135. He probably would get KTFO.
A few years back at 154 , I would pick Wink.

  12. CleanYourClock

    At 147 ?

Don't you think Winky would be fucked up if he went down to 147 ?

Winky's even less likely to come down to 147 than Oscar is.

Winky's just talking. Oscar would be like half dead from making 147, Winky would be more like 3/4 dead.

  14. joony

    joony "Twinkle Toes" McJack

i highly doubt that winky can make 154.

if this fight happened at 160, winky probably wins 10 rounds. if this fight happened 3 years ago at 154, winky probably wins 8 rounds.

saying that this fight could happen at 147 is like saying who would win right now between roy vs. jermain taylor at 160.

Oscar is more of a businessman than a boxer now. He is being honest. He knows that fight will never happen. You can call it ducking. He would call it smart business. A fight with Winky is a lose lose. The fight would be boring as hell as most of Wink's are and Oscar would look horrible against Winky's style. Oscar only has a few fights left, it won't be against Winky. I really like the idea of Winky fighting Vargas or Forrest comes to mind as well

cant blame winky for wanting a payday, but he shouldnt be calling out any soon-to-be welterweights.

i'd rather see him fight the winner of pavlik-taylor at 168 or drop back down to 160 and fight abraham (although i doubt that abraham would come to US).

I'm not going to lose sleep over winky missing out on that De La payday that he feels he deserves. It's been pointed out before but i think we are all jaded with these part-timers and former names squeezing nest-egg paydays out of what remains of their collective name-value...Hopkins-Winky@170, Jones-Tito etc., I can't blame these guys for avoiding the dangerous young guys in their divisions but it's taking up valuable TV time, enough already...

Well all those fights were when Oscar was not only a full-time fighter, but also they were the best and most lucrative bouts for De La Hoya at the time.

DLH-Trinidad was naturally going to be made. 2 undefeated WW titlists, the Puerto Rican-Mexican (American) rivalry. A couple fights later, the best fight for Oscar to take was Mosley. What other names were there at WW in 2000? Oscar didn't want to go up to rematch Trinidad at a weight above 147 so it had to be welterweight fight. The Vargas fight was a unification bout and the biggest money maker at 154 in 2002. Oscar could've chose to fight Winky instead, but Vargas provided more money, a grudge match, and most likely an easier fight. Mosley was too proud after the 2nd bout to take the shorter end of the purse against DLH, so Oscar looked elsewhere. Hopkins was a bigger name and payday than Winky (Oscar made like $30 mil), and not only that, but a win over the longest reigning MW champ ever would've done more for DLH's legacy than a win over Winky.

Again at this point, Oscar has better options than Winky. Easier fights against bigger names.

He'd rather just wait to face smaller guys like Cotto, Hatton, or maybe a Mayweather rematch. They all provide bigger paydays than Winky and are more winnable fights for Oscar than the physically bigger southpaw in Winky.

DLH has nothing to prove...and fighting Winky will just add another L to his resume at this moment...:nono:

I don't see the masses screaming for Winky vs. De La Hoya...so why make it?

De La Hoya is looking for more winnable fights...

I agree that at this point a Winky-Oscar matchup is pointless and unintriguing.

Hell, I'd rather see Oscar fight Forrest than Winky.

Ya know Neil , I normally wouldn't even have brought that fight up but , your dislike for anything to do with DLH is getting old.

You just automatically assume DLH would lose 12 of 12 rounds yet Vargas regardless how close you thought the fight was , beat Winky.
Even if you think Wink won , it still would have only been by a round or so.

Seriously man , do you not see this bias you have.

biased or not, he's telling the obvious. i thought winky beat vargas clearly. there's no way that vargas won more than 5 rounds.

as for oscar, he's no longer the same fighter that beat vargas and is also a much smaller guy than winky.

if you're gonna bring up vargas, you might as well bring up how easily winky beat tito.

i'd be really surprised if oscar managed to win more than 3 rounds vs. winky.
