New York, September 20—Dino Duva, president of Duva Boxing, the promoter of WBC no. 1 contender Samuel Peter, was very emotional about the fact that the sacred Madison Square Garden boxing ring has been retired before Peter’s October 6 World Heavyweight Title fight against Oleg Maskaev, and not after the fight. <!-- m -->http://www.fightbeat.com/news_details.php?NW=20348
I'm glad they did so - so that C-class fighters Peter and Maskaev did not disgrace that ring with the pure fact that these two bums are actually fighting for the heavyweight title. That in itself is disgrace enough for MSG.
CYC's point is well taken, though. At best, in judging it against other MSG headliners, this fight is no more significant than Vitali-Kirk Johnson. Any word on how ticket sales are going for this card? Duva was yelling and screaming all year that it was Maskaev was denying the world of the one heavyweight fight the world demanded. Curious to see if ticket sales support his claim any.
Speaking of Which, Duva Needs to TERMINATE Kirk's Contract so he Can Fight Again... Since Every OTHER Heavy Gets 27 Chances, REED Thinks Kirk Deserves @ LEAST 1 or 2 More... REED:cheer:
:: I bet a lot boxing fans who have Showtime would rather pay $50 to see Pacquiao-Barrera 2 (which many believe to be a mismatch) than to watch this one for free.
Don't hold your breath. I don't think he's ever forgiven Kirk for showing up how he did against Vitali. Or even for fouling out against Ruiz ::
I'm actually one of them. I have very little interest in this fight, other than rooting for an upset.
I don't have Showtime, but if I did, I'd still probably rather go to the bar and spend money to watch Pac-Barrera 2. I want Peter to win though, and I don't want the winner to fight Brittley and then the fight gets cancelled.
But that's just It... YES, Kirk CHOKED Against Ruiz & he was BEACHED WHALE in the Vitali Bout...Given that, REED would Think Duva Couldn't WAIT to RID Himself of Kirk's "Services"... Why RETAIN a Guy who's Been a Dissapointment to U???...Why Not CUT BAIT???... REED:dunno:
I cancelled Showtime twice this year. First time was after Corrales-Clottey, as there was nothing else in the next few months that interested me. I renewed in right before the Donaire-NoChinyan card, and then cancelled immediately after catching the replay of Vazquez-Marquez II. Dawson's fight next week is free preview weekend, and if I don't renew for JMM-Juarez, then I won't renew at all until at least beginning of 2008. It goes without saying, I'll be watching Pac-MAB II instead, which is saying a lot as it was a card that never really interested me.
I don't get it either. All promoters do it. They'd rather see a fighter suffer under their reign than do anything (good or bad) with another promoter.
