If he was just some minor contender that was expected the lose, he wouldn't have been considered p4p. It would have been considered a fluke. Hatton has proven though that he is one of the best contenders in a deep division.

Hatton hasn't done anything at welterweight to make me think that he is one of the top three contenders. And right now the division is deep only because fighters from other weight divisions are moving up and down into it. Margarito wouldn't beat Shane, Miguel or Floyd. But he would Rickey'.
If he beats Mayweather decisively he is number one in my book. He already stopped Tszyu and Castillo. And while revisionist history says Tszyu was coming of a five year lay-off and Castillo was shot for five years, the truth is Hatton was a underdog with most hardcore boxing fans going into both fights. Castillo only became shot, when E. Steward couldn´t keep his mouth shut from the opening bell until Hatton knocked Castillo out. And Tszyu was widely considered p4p top 5 after his destruction of Mitchell. So he would at least be on a level with Pacquiao, with Kessler a close third after his KO win over Calzaghe.
