NEW YORK (Sept. 25, 2007) – If the saying “styles make fights†holds any truth, then Don King Productions has found the perfect replacement opponent for World Boxing Council (WBC) Light Heavyweight Champion Chad Dawson in hard-hitting Epifanio Mendoza (28-4-1, 24 KOs). Mendoza, who opened his professional career with 16 consecutive knockouts, likely will give the younger Dawson (24-0, one NC, 16 KOs) fits when the two tangle Saturday, Sept. 29, on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING at 10 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast). Mendoza, of Barranquilla, Colombia, replaces Adrian Diaconu, http://www.fightbeat.com/news_details.php?NW=20391
He can put Chad on ice yes, but he had better get him within the first couple of rounds or he is done IMO, and Chad will take over when he gasses out after 3.
Chad can just as easily put him away early... or middle... or late. Mendoza doesn't exactly take as good as he can give. And that was at middleweight. A fluke knockdown wouldn't surprise me, but believing he'll win? Karl, you should actually be rooting for Dawson to not only win, but look spectacular. The more you tear him down, the less impressive it will look if your boy fights and beats him - or on the flip side, look even more embarrassing if Chad beats Henry.
with all the fights to be made at ltHW, Dawson disappoints me with this choice. Fuck, Montel Griffin would have been a better choice.:shit:
mendoza is the garbage version of mayorga if there ever was one. good power, shitty stamina, no skills
dawson will take over when the bell rings for round one. mendozas boxing ability is on par with stingers observational ability.
No one is going to be embarrased by any one fight, Jake. Well, maybe Duane Bobick was when he was murdered by Kenny Norton with millions and millions watching globally. Mendoza is a winger pure and simple, and will be gassed out after three rounds.
I know I was unable to join you at the last Mensa meeting at casa de stinger, but your remark is still very presumptive.
It's a very dissapointing choice for a fill in, but it's better than nothing...even if only slightly. Dawson remains yet to face a second legit opponent...and fans across the globe are all over him. I fail to see why.
Because of the obvious talent. :bears: Also, Eric Harding was legit and Dawson beat the hell out of him.
Glen Johnson beat the hell out of Harding too. It's nothing impressive. Dawson has talent. So do lots of fighters. They all need to realise that talent and potential in the ring though, before being heralded as gods gift. He's another Jeff Lacy at this point in time.
Dawson's win over Adamek is better than anything Lacy did IMO. I was actually looking forward to his fight with Diaconu but not Dawson's fault that Diaconu pulled out :dunno: Harding was still credible when Dawson beat his ass IMO.
Depends on what you call credible. Being around in your 70's and obviously not near what you were half a decade ago, yet still being competetive in a shit division...well, that says more about the state of 175 than it does about Eric Harding, IMO.
Harding was coming off a couple decent wins which made him credible in my eyes. Oh well though Dawson is pretty young, plenty of time to prove he is the best at 175.
Who? Telesco? Judah? Those are not decent wins, bro. You know that too.Telesco was shot to pieces and Judah is just no good at all. Well, I have no problem with this. Thats fair and in time he may become the best. I think he has the stuff to do it. But appointing him #1 right now and giving him breaks this early in the piece is dead wrong, IMO.
.... IMO he is already the best Light Heavyweight in the world. Not sure what's wrong about that. :dunno:
The fact that he's beat one guy, who wasn't even #1 himself? We obviously have far different rationale for ranking fighters.
.... Like I said, to me Dawson is the best fighter. A lot of people like to say Hopkins is without a doubt the Light Heavyweight Champion but I can't agree. The guy beats Tarver, don't fight for a year and then fights a Middlweight when he returns. He just hasn't done much at Light heavyweight to me.
I agree...yet his one win, certainly trumps Dawson's one win. Hopkins however, beat 'the guy' (Tarver will never be a man)....until Dawson does that, he's a happy #2 at best to me.
The lineal guy is erdei. The ring guy was tarver. The guy who looked most dangerous was adamek. Now the ring guy is hopkins and the guy who looks most dangerous is dawson. I suppose it depends on what you like.
Maybe so but to me Dawson is the best fighter at 175. Maybe you can rank certain guys ahead of him for 1 reason or another, but to me I pick Dawson to beat anyone currently at 175.
dawson's young and talented. at the time, i thought adamek was the best guy in the division and dawson beat him decisively. not sure if he's the best lt heavy, but he certainly hasn't proven so with one significant win. i'll wait until he beats few other proven guys before making that assumption. in terms of head to head matchup, i dont know how much hopkins has left, but other than him, i'd pick dawson over just about anyone at 175. that's easier said than done, so i guess we'll just have to wait and see.
There's 6 other fighters who I'd pick to beat Hopkins arse with EASE at Lightheavyweight alone, if he dares to fight anyone credible his own size, he'll be EXPOSED, but inevitably, let's look for him to face someone incredibly ancient themselves, or someone significantly smaller again. Hopkins shreiks with terror at the mere mention of Dawson, maybe he'll pull a Fraud since it's been made acceptable to do so these days and say "Who's Dawson?" if ever confronted with the question.
would that include the bad ass trio such as erdei, woods, and julio gonzalez? :: or let me guess, paul briggs? glen johnson? fabrice tiozzo? :: hopkins took tarver to school. i doubt the guys you would list would've managed to have done a better job let alone win.
I'd pick Dawson, Diaconu, Green, Briggs, Adamek, and Erdei to beat his arse without question, and that's without mentioning 3 or 4 supermiddleweights and a few other middleweights including his master, Sir Jermaine Taylor, Hopkins may have this high extravagant flashy American profile, but these days he fucken blows, he's a blown out fly-screen with rusty old hinges that endeared groupies are clinging too tentatively, look for him to carefully rat out his next exploitant with some form of dabilitating disadvantage, Hopkins is a scavenger Joon :nono: .
that wasn't my point, though. What I'm saying is that the next time you give Chad Dawson any credit will be the first time. Which only means higher expectations to be put on your guy to not only win, but win big.
