Oleg Maskaev’s unlikely reign as heavyweight champion ended not with a knockout but with a decision: a vote by the World Boxing Council’s board of governors to name Samuel Peter its interim titleholder. <o></o> His manager thinks the WBC didn’t give Maskaev a fair shot. Fred Kesch denounced the WBC decision as “absurd,†“reprehensible†and “disgraceful.†http://www.fightbeat.com/news_details.php?NW=20411
uhm, that's what happens when you defend your title. plus, it's not like he was stripped of his title. they just created an interim status for peter, meaning maskaev is due to fight the winner in less than 90 days or so. maskaev and his camp are the ones who were avoiding peter and stalling his career. i hope maskaev doesnt get another pay day.
Long story short: Maskaev can't make a huge payday by defending his title against Klitschko without fighting Peter first. That's why he's pissed.
Whoever signs to fight Vitali, I hope there's a guarantee for a good amount of money if and when Vitali pulls out. Vitali may present a nice payday, but he's 0 for his last 5 in making it through training camp.
I think Maskaev and Vitali should in fact fight first and whoever doesn´t show up for the fight forfeits his rights for a shot at Peter. If Peter has to fight both it will probably take till 2010. Peter can fight the winner of Gomez/McCall in the meantime.
