by Craig Medaris / FightBeat Staff Writer The first Saturday in October will feature a pair of important fights to kick off the heavily loaded final quarter of the boxing calendar for 2007. First of all is the long-awaited rematch featuring Manny Pacquiao and Marco Antonio Barrera. Perhaps a few years overdue, the fight still holds great interest with the fans and will a little luck, should feature some explosive action along the way. The other marquee fight that weekend was to be the WBC Heavyweight title fight, featuring champion Oleg Maskaev and #1 contender, Samuel Peter. Slated for Madison Square Garden, the fight was an important one not only for the division, but for the sport in general. Every heavyweight title fight has a certain feel to it. An aura about that somehow sets it apart from every other fight of importance. Even in today’s watered down version of the sport, in a shambles of a division, the title of “Heavyweight champion of the world†still means something. Maybe not what it did even a decade ago, but when you hold that distinction, you’re a member of what still remains an exclusive club. http://fightbeat.com/article_detail.php?AT=501
there shouldnt be any more articles on mccline. i'd like to see tam-tam do a write up on green and how his chances stand on upsetting tarver in december.
Yeah, thats not a bad idea. I'd happily do that once I get back. Hopefully this is the last thing I ever have to write about McCline as well. ::
Thats almost true. His TWO wins over Toney would trump this...but its a valid point. Peter has never beaten a big guy with the reputation of McCline. Whatever that is.
Well, I hadn't sat down to pen any kind of boxing media in a couple of years and it was terribly hard to even get started. I think part of that problem was hightened by having to write about Jameel McFuckenCline. :: I do think the fight has a bit of intigue about it. It should answer a lot of questions about Sam, IMO.
dsimon writes: :bears: I second that except he didn't call the fight right as this will be an upset guys.... and I will sell the Brooklyn Bridge tomorrow and pigs can fly and Santa Clause exists.
McCline folds up when someone hits him hard. He has never shown any ability to handle a puncher. He will fall in five.
Thanks for the kind words fellas. Like I told Carlos, I plan on contributing as much as possible for the forseable future, while I'm stuck at home. Hopefully I can get my writing back up to standard in quick time and help out Fightbeat in this way, as well as helping out on the boards where I can.
No matter what you write about, if you find a way to take a shot at Roy Jones anywhere in the article Cupey will publish it. ::
Not to defend McCline with any real vigor, but I can't agree with this. Sure Jameel froze vs. Wlad, but he isn't alone there. But apart from that, he showed vs. Briggs that he can handle a limited banger. He beat Shannon easier than anyone has since Lewis did it back in the 90's. Again, thats no prize pig of a scalp, but I do think its unfair to label McCline so blindly. There are times in his past where he has done the kinds of things fans and media members swear he can not.
The fact that jameel is an over the hill never was ASIDE if Peter blows him out early i will be impressed...having said that expect a close points win for peters
