Pavlik/Taylor was not that good a fight. The result must have been pleasing to those hoping Taylor would lose, and the fact that Pavlik was down before coming back to stop the champion was exciting, but minute for minute, there's at least 100 middle-weights that were better than Pavlik/Taylor, IMO.

    Frank Fletcher-James Green
    Marvin Hagler-John Mugabi

  8. Jake

If the fight itself is taken at face value, I agree, people are beginning to overrate it. But when you add up:
    A good slugfest
+ THE middleweight title at stake
+ challenger overcoming knockdown to pummel champ into submission
+ first major stateside-televised bout in seven weeks

you come up with the buzz we've seen/heard in the past few days.

Good topic...I don't have anything else to contribute, but good topic nevertheless.

I'll just say that Hagler-Hearns was a GREAT first round and Excellent KO finish, but because of the weak 2nd round, not sure it should be at the very top of the list.

No, because it is obvious those fights have been better than anything since videocameras were invented. Those fights have their own league

I forgot about the Monzon-Valdez return, I thought Rocky won it when I watched it live as a kid, but in watching it now, Monzon wins clearly on points in a brutal battle.
I'd add Valdez-Bennie Briscoe for the WBA title as well for consideration.
Toe to toe action with rocky jumping to an early lead, but Bennie had his eye cut bad and was really banging him until Valdez cold-cocked him with one right hand.

Never seen it but I'll put it on my search list. I love watching Monzon and for many reasons (back story, drama) I love the second Valdez fight.

Really? He's surely one of the all time greats but his fights are like Nyquil to me. The only way i can tell the difference from one fight of his to another's is by looking at the opponent.

That's surely testament to his greatness, he was a methodical, patient ring assassin that didn't even need to adjust to his opponent. He fought the same way and beat them all.

    I like watching Monzon fights.

I can appreciate his skill and how effective he was too. But why do enjoy watching his fights? If you've seen one you've seen them all basically.

Even a Monzon highlight reel would be monotonous.

yes, valdez-briscoe II was a war. great fight.

  27. Rubio MHS

    • Tony Zale vs. Rocky Graziano, I, II and III
    • The fights between Jake LaMotta and Fritzie Zivic
    • William Lee vs. Frank Fletcher
    • Kelly Pavlik vs. Jermaine Taylor
    • Marvin Hagler vs. Tommy Hearns
    • Sugar Ray Robinson vs. Randy Turpin I
    • Bernard Hopkins vs. Felix Trinidad (might not be as good in hindsight, but I loved every minute of it)
    • Sugar Ray Robinson vs. Gene Fullmer II
    • Gerald McClellan vs. Nigel Benn
    • Stanley Ketchel vs. Billy Papke IV
    Too many to mention.
