Barrera did exactly the thing that he needed to: tried to keep the pace slow, the rounds close and edge as many of them as possible. It wasn't nearly enough and he didn't come close of winning, but that was his best chance. By slugging it out he would have just been beaten up. Of course it would have been nice to see but that's not what it is about

Were you surprised? Everyone seems to giving Pacquiao sh*t for his performance tonight (instead of giving him sh*t for having the nerve to even take this bout) but no one seemed to notice that Barrera's fire left the building a while back. We all saw it in those two bouts with Juarez. I expected Pacquiao to either come in guns blazing and drop him a couple times early. I figured Barrera wouldn't bother getting up. Instead, he boxed from the outside and pulled the same sh*t he did with Juarez. Only Manny Pacquiao is no Rocky Juarez.

I agree, Barrera giving a better effort didn't mean slug in it out.

On every exchange Barrera held his own. That's the reason I think he could and should have been better. Especially late in the fight.

Otherwise why take the fight? after the fight he actually said that Manny hardly landed on him. :eeeek:

So what should have he done in your opinion? How exactly should he have "tried"?

Didn't see the fight, but from account I had, MAB fought to survive which is totally unacceptable for a fighter getting paid so much $$$$$$. He should be ashamed of himself.

YOu're were giving shit to Bergeron for his performance vs Valuev ( and he at least made it a close fight ) why are you not willing to do the same for MAB ???

I criticized them both there mainly for putting up such a crappy fight. Perhaps Bergeron did what he could there (in which case you have a good point) but he didn't try to win rounds even as much as Barrera did (as he spent most of his time walking backwards and even though he rocked Valuev good in the second round he never tried it again).

It is no coincedence that he fought a cautious boxing contest in fights where he came in as a dog.

It worked beautifully in the Hamed fight, got him a win (questionable) in Morales 2, and Juarez 2.

Manny is just too strong and aggressive for this to work against him, thats all.

    No big deal.

There were 2 or 3 instances where Barrera couldve gone the all out war-route but he flipped a u-turn and went back to boxing because the further he went into these exchanges, Manny's aggression level rose too high.

Barrera should have fought more tougher for the fans, who wanted him to go out gangsta. He let them down. Who did he think he was? A old, former great figher, on his last legs and in there with the most feared fighter in the world? What a disgrace, yo.

On his last legs? He looked sharper than in the first fight, he might be an aging great but on his last legs he isn't.

SHarper than the first fight? Thats some achievement. By not being splattered across the ring and losing every second of the fight, he improved on his performance. Whoop-de-do.

You're free to think what you wish, but IMO Barrera has been clearly declining for the past half decade. If these aren't his last legs, he must be some kind of centipede.

Declining? Of course, that's only natural. But it's not like he's suddenly just looked done like morales.

To be honest I was surprised not only by his general sharpness but the speed of some of his right hand counters, following Manny's own very fast straight left.

Those kind of reactions or not a trademark of a fighter on his last legs.

I think he probably went in there thinking he could box Pacquiao to a win. I can guess that his people are the ones that put that into his head...the same ones that were telling him he was up 3-0 early.

When that wouldn't work he wasn't willing to go out on his shield. I had a feeling that would be the case with him talking about retiring before the fight.

I don't know that we can blame him for not turning it into a fight that he knew would result in him being knocked out...can you hold that against a guy? But, in the end, we didn't get our money's worth, so I can see why people are calling him a bitch.

I can understand if Barrera was inferior in the ring. But he held is own on every har exchange.

Did you also give Roy a standing ovation after the third Tarver fight?

    dsimon writes;

People are thinking so one dimensionally. Barrera is one of the smartest guys, along with Marquez. And they both have a ton of heart as well. Barrera had a plan. He was trying to capitolize on Manny's mistakes. He fought a good fight and when he had to be he was aggressive back to keep Manny honest.

Barrera was even succesful at times, but no he wasn't going to slug it out, and why should he? If a few more things had happened differently he might have had more success. You can't simply decide to slug it out suddenly, you train a certain way to fight a certain way.

I think that Manny is smarter than people think and can protect his weaknesses better than people think. At this stage in his career Manny is just better.

So because he held his own, he was a pussy?

And "also"? Where am I applauding Barrera here? I'm simply saying that to attack a guy for fighting with a a stretegy designed to give him the best chance for success, is fucking moronic.

what was the point of making this fight if surviving was the only purpose?

Sure he had the right game plan. But fans didn't pay 50 bucks to watch this clown make it to the 12th round and brag about proving people wrong.:nono:

Once he held his own he proved he could have taken more of a risk. that is the reason people rip his performance. Hell, Barrera even managed to rock Pacquiao at one point. So why not take a risk?

Jesus he waited four years for this rematch. gave so many excuses about distractions. Announced his retirement. Knew pretty much what to expect from Pacquiao. So if this didn't motivate the guy to step it up then when could he get motivated? :dunno:

To make matters worst he didn't even credit Manny after the fight. he said he basically dominated him with one hand and after the headbutt he was taken of his gameplan.

Making this fight was a waste of time.

Not when you're barrera, a fighter known for being a warrior, and not when he promised to avenge his loss for his own country. he didn't lived up to the hype. He went in, shitting in his pants, and went into surviving mode. Same thing happened to jones vs tarver. Barrera is a pussy who does dirty things when he's losing. he never came in with a plan to win, but a plan not to get KTFO.

Manny beats any post-Morales 1 version of Barrera.

Barrera who fought McKinney poses the biggest problem for Manny.

As far as the title of the thread goes, no Barrera fought like a pussy in the first fight with Pacquiao.
