I'd say bad news for Kessler. Joe got dropped, but he was not hurt "BAD" like you claim to have said. Joe came back and took his ass out. Dude, the man has the eye of the tiger, Joe is gonna win. opcorn:
Kessler is way better than Byron Mitchell IMO and that was a younger Calzaghe. Nobody can say he lacks heart and guts though, he really took some serious risks to return Mitchell the favour. I think the stoppage wasn't as bad as some made it out to be back when the fight happened.
agREED, Seemed like some bitched, and the rest jumped on the bandwagon without ever watching the fight. Though there was one moment that would make Double L proud, where Joe had Mitchell hurt, then looked to the ref as if that was his cue to step in as previously discussed.
I didn't notice that but I know that's the kind of stuff that Double L looks for. I can already imagine what he will say if Calzaghe stops Kessler : "The hard punches don't matter, Calzaghe sold himself with that quick glance at the ref." Meanwhile, Kessler's unconcious body is surrounded by the medical staff and his leg is shaking uncontrolably.::
one thing i have not seen from kessler is his ability to mix it up and go to war. he could put calzaghe at bay w/ his long punches from the outside, but im curious to find out how he'll react when calzaghe starts bouncing in and out and throw flurries on the inside.
..and I have never seen Calzaghe beat a guy with real classic boxing/defensive skills, so we both have something to look forward to. :tease:
yes we do. i'm rooting for calzaghe to win, but i like kessler as well. i hope it turns out to be a good fight.
i still dont get why double l hates calzaghe. i know he's got the whole hatton-like white skin and european thing going for him, but he's clearly not a boring fighter nor does he ever clinch.
The Mitchell fight is actually one of the few times I was impressed with Calzaghe. Just because he was knocked down doesn't add hope for Kessler. In fact, the way Joe stood his ground and traded after being hurt actually diminishes Kessler's chances in my opinion. However, as previously mentioned, the stoppage was hometown. I would like to have seen it go further to a natural conclusion.
Calzaghe had him. I would have let it go too. Mitchell might have made it another round or two, but the guy was thru for the night.
This is a poor man's version of the "Joe Louis has a good chin" argument. The fact that Byron Mitchell dropped and hurt a younger, "prime" Calzaghe definitely does not mean anything other than bad things from Joe's perspective. A fighter of Calzaghe's stature shouldn't need to play the perserverence card against someone of Byron Mitchell's calibur, mostly because all that means is someone like BM was able to drop him and hurt him. It'd be like saying, well Duran got hurt and dropped by DeJesus, but showed perserverance in coming back strong. That doesn't bold well for hearns' chances of stopping him.
This is the Calzaghe fight I aluded to in the last radio show and why I hestitate to pick against him at any time. Is Kessler prepared to face this type of determination and overall class?
I like Kessler as a fighter. Good power, hand speed, and technique. But he's also rather stiff, and seems slow on his feet, and seems to go back and forth in straight lands. Zags is more dynamic, quicker hands and feet, along with his experience. I like Joe here in a close and competitive fight. Kessler will certainly have moments but I think Joe's speed and experience are the difference and I see both those attributes carrying him to a deserved decision victory in a very good fight.
Slow on his feet? Have you seen the Andrade, Siaca and Mundine fights? This will be ultra-competitive - and Calzaghe's chances are very good. But it won't be because Kessler has slow feet. Peace.
Wow, you're not much of a fight fan if you don't think getting tested and succeeding helps forge a better fighter. Calzaghe got dropped and he responded like great fighters do; he got up and subsequently kicked a lesser fighters ass. Do I need to list the All-Time great fighters that got dropped by lesser guy? The list is long.
yeah i know, but its certainly not better for Calzaghe that someone of Byron Mitchell's calibur had him on queer street. He obviously can take a punch, but having a shitty outing did not help him. He has never lost, so this isn't a case of him overcoming the mindset issues that come with a first loss and a cloud of invincibility. It was a case of him having a rough night. If that same Calzaghe shows up, kessler will win. Although Calzaghe has looked good lately, though the jury will be out for awhile about how good Lacy actually is. I'm just objecting to the idea that being hurt and dropped is better than that not happening at all
