Joe Mesi needed to do something huge today to silence the skeptics. He did just that when the NY native stopped Shannon Miller at 2:51 of the first round to win the USNBC title Friday night at Twin River Event Center.

Mesi improved to 36-0 with 29KO's. He knocked down Miller midway through the round before dropping him for good with a right hook along the ropes.

Mesi dedicated the fight to injured Buffalo Bills tight end Kevin Everett and sported Everett's home jersey as he stepped into the ring for his debut with his new promoter, CES president Jimmy Burchfield.

That's a statement. It means he's still 1 step over garbageman beater.

If he'd done this in 2005, it might have been meaningful.

I always thought Miller was a real tough club fighter wjo comes to fight.
I don't think putting him on ice quick makes a statement, though.
    Congrats, Joe.
