scored 2nd round knockout on Dia de los Diaz undercard against late replacement, the normally durable (though always shitty) Otis Tisdale. Two knockdowns in the first, one more in the 2nd, fight stopped immediately after 2nd round knockdown (:45 into 2nd round). Ruiz also got rocked at one point, but maintained his composure, and hardly clinched at all! (even though bout was only 3:45 long)
Other results from undercard: Karim Mayfield (5-0-1, 5KO), managed by Jackie Kallen, destroyed Rahman Yasubov (now 6-1, 3KO), dropping him 3 times in 2nd round to force stoppage. Official time 2:47 of 2nd round. Devon Alexander (12-0, 8KO) looked sensational in tearing through previously unbeaten Cory Peterson (now 7-1, 2KO). Alexander (cory spinks stablemate, trained by Kevin Cunningham) scored two knockdowns, Peterson taking a nine count on the 2nd knockdown, but unresponsive prompting ref to wave off bout. Official time 2:59 of round 1. Miguel Acosta (21-3-2, 6KO) scored a minor upset, overcoming two knockdowns to take a well-earned split decision over previously unbeaten Anges Adjaho (22-1, 12KO). Acosta dominated early, but was dropped hard and almost out in the 9th. Won 10th and 11th, well on his way to winning the 12th before suffering a flash knockdown midway through the round. Got up, recovered and controlled the rest of the round. Scores 115-112 and 114-112 for Acosta, and an absurd 115-111 for Adjaho. Acosta now mandatory challenger to fellow Venezuelan Edwin Valero.
Ruiz looked good, he got caught simply because he was on the offensive and in search of a knockout. Defense was a rumor tonight, he wanted to make a statement, and kind of did. Tisdale normally goes rounds, so the knockout was somewhat impressive.
Angel Hernandez scored a major upset with an 8-rd unanimous decision over previously unbeaten Louis Turner. Fight was a war in the 1st half, Hernandez took over, nearly had Turner out in the 6th, both stood toe to toe at fights end but Turner was always a step (and punch) behind. Scores were 79-73, 78-74 and 78-74. I had it 78-73, scoring the 6th 10-8 even w/o the knockdown.
Not sure how good his opponent was, but Karim looked great. I think he knew early what he could get away with. He roughed him up a bit in the 2nd, got warned twice for roughhouse tactics. After the second warning, Karim said fuck it and went for the close. Floored Yasubov with a right, and that was the beginning of the end. I was very impressed.
Round 6 of Priest Smalls-Vasyli Tarabarov, crowd has vehemently booed every round. the exact opposite of the prior fight (Hernandez-Turner)
Smalls should be condemed to this level of fight the rest of his career. NTBOTVA: Never To Be On TV Again. We need to get him some shirts printed up with that on it. He'd love it.
It'd be 2006 all over again :: Mike Mollo just scored a 2nd round knockout over Art Binkowski. That referee (Gerald Scott) should have his license revoked for letting Binkowski take that many shots at the end. Tam Tam, agreed. That fight was terrible. So much that most of us in press row left after the third round, came back, and just talked amongst ourselves, refusing to look toward the ring. The crowd said it all. That was terrible.
I didn't know Mayfield is managed by Jackie Kallen. The one time I saw him, on the Toney-Batchelder shitfight card earlier this year, he looked poor. Good to know he fought well and looked good.
Yeah,me neither?? I've also never seen Ruiz look like such a beast as in that fight!! He must be lurking in the internet boxing forums and actually reading what everybody has to say about his style!!::
At about 2:45of the 1st round, Ruiz and Otis feet tangled while Otis threw a right hand and Ruiz kind of lost balance, at ringside, it easilly could have been confused with him getting rocked. BTW, Ruiz looked like a beast too vs Ray Anis years ago
Ruiz was the best heavyweight after Lennox left the sport.... The pussy namaed Quitaly absolutely refused to entertain the idea of fighting Johnny, despite the fact The Quiet Man repeatedly called him out..... Heck, Shitaly was even afraid to step in the same ring with Ruiz' victim, and prefered to leave boxing, rather than fight Rahman....
I don't remember Ruiz being brutalized by the likes of Lamon Brewster and Corey Sanders :dunno: :dunno: I also don't remember Wlad beating 2 former undisputed heavyweight world champions. :dunno: Seriously, when your best win is over non-entity like Samuel Peter, where you hit the ground every 5 minutes or so, without even knocking down the glass-chinned, feather-fisted (65% KO, without KOing a single notable opponent) African, one can only laugh... At least Ruiz brutalizes his bums, and disposes of them quickly, while Wlad feels the need to smell the canvas repeatedly....
