Neither does Floyd but that's the way it goes.If your too good or exceeding the haters expectations you get the Mayweather backlash and I notice that's what Manny's getting lately.

He can make the weight,he just needs to get his ass in camp next time.IMO he's to small for that weight class,he hasn't even fought a natural 130lber yet except for morales.

Honestly? Morales was a lot closer to a natural 130 than 122 or 126. Guys was walking in the ring at 140+ when he fought at 126.

Morales was a natural 135. I say that because he looked like absolute GARBAGE at PAC 2 and 3 weigh-ins, both of which I was <20feet away from the scale... If Morales trained right for a lightweight fight, he would have n=been a GREAT lightweight.

    So far, people have mentioned:
    Diaz
    Guzman/Soto
    Pacuiao
    Marquez

It seems like we can afford to wait and see just a bit before we really chomp at the bit for our particular matchup, since honestly these guys appear to be making the kind of fights we want to see. We're being a bit overzealous pushing for specific matchups.

Plus, throw in some wildcard names like Valero and Casamayor...

Agreed. If Manny really can't make 130 anymore then bring on Diaz, otherwise do some business at 130. Lots of guys to fight there.

Perhaps I'm in the minority, but I wasn't impressed with last nights fight. Truth be told, I fell asleep halfway through and woke up when they were announcing the winner.

Diaz is certainly the best at 135, but in my mind I see that as an indication of how little talent is in the division. Does anyone really think Juan would have had much of a chance against Mayweather, Corrales or Castillo when they were at their best at 135? I don't.

Juan's a good kid and there's a tremendous amount of things you can like about the guy (except for his annoying super fan) but I just can't get overly excited about watching him fight.

And contrary to what's repetitively shoved down the throats by a certain poster on this board...I've got a few co-workers and friends who live in the Houston area and both have repeatedly said the said thing about the guy...no one in that area knows or cares about the kid which is sad.

The best thing that could happen for Juan is for this to be his last fight with King and he manages to sign with Golden Boy (hate to say it) or Top Rank. That's the only way he'll make any real money because Top Rank/Golden Boy share Pacquiao, Top Rank has David Diaz (who they might sacrifice to Pacquiao) and Casamayor is with Golden Boy.

I'd like to see Juan make some real money while he's still young.

I'm convinced Manny can make 130 for at least 2 more years, and do it well.

    Peace.

Diaz is definitely in a good spot in the LWT division now - no doubt his dominance (present and purportedly future) is in part due to the relative weakness of the division.

That being said, there are some barnburners waiting with Katsidis, David Diaz and Casamayor....and eventually Pac, Valero, Guzman, Marquez, Barrios if/when they move up.

Juan is very much a wash-rinse-repeat kinda boxer; but his game HAS improved in terms of his jab, his punch selection, his ability to integrate defense, his head/waist movement and parrying.

And of all people YOU know this is coming from someone who was pretty critical of him early on.

As to the lack of a fanbase in Houston...not totally unexpected.

That's why I keep tellin Ron King that Pac-Marquez II is a bigger fight, no doubt.

    Peace.

Lol. Did your make believe friends in the Houston area go into a old folks home and go into the alzhiemer's ward and ask them who Juan Diaz is?

Because I remember going to one of his fights in freakin 2001 at the Reliant Arena and the place was sold out and the fans were fukin crazy into it.

    That is correct, Tex.
Reliant was also sold out for his title winning effort vs Lakva Sim and his title defense vs. Billy Irwin.

Juan was a 4 round fighter in 2001...Rocky Juarez was the draw at that point because he was much more known due to his Olympic experience.

Juan was the young kid and basically a Main Events filler fighter at that point. Juarez and Cintron had much higher profiles and importance to Main Events.

    Ya'll musta forgot...

He's certainly easier to watch than Ricky Hugton.

Wait a minute....that was a 4 or 6-rounder on the UNDERCARD of a Juarez fight, who was the real draw in 2001 in Houston.

And weren't Rocky Juarez and Cintron present again on the card when Juan fought Sim?

I can buy into Juan having some popularity in Houston, but I don't know that he's a major draw in Texas....not speaking against it but it just doesn't seem that way to me. :dunno:

    Peace.

Actually, I was at the 2002 fights were Bojado, Diaz, and Juarez were all undercards for Harris v Hurtado.

Diaz and Juarez both recieved the best reception from the crowd.

Juan did have a following even back then.

People sometimes forget that Houston has the second largest Mexican-American population in the U.S.

That was 2002, both are very well known now and now I'm hearing things about a Featherwieght Hylon Williams, going to be an alternate on the 2008 Olympic team, people are talking about him here in Houston and he's not even Hispanic.

By the way, my father owns a car dealership in Houston near Juarez's gym, has sold a car or two to the Juarez family, good people.

If a Houston fighter fights here, he sells out here.

I think your sig proves more about you than you realize. Houston is not a boxing town. It is a very good place to train. Climate wise and gym wise. We have many good fighters and trainers working here. However, not since Ali-Williams (TIC) has there been a good crowd at a fight. Main Events put on about 7 shows here with Juarez/Diaz and others and they stopped because the attendance was so pawltry. The city is to blame, but also Main Events is a bad promotion and does not expend any effort in marketing their shows here. They show up 3 days before the fight and spend half that time golfing.

There's many reasons Houstonians dont go to fights. The main stream sports fan here cares more about the new Argentinian added to the Rocket's preseason roster or why the last place Astros do not call up 25 year olds who are tearing up the minor leagues than they do about a unified world champion.

Rocky, Juan, Raul Marquez, Chris Henry, Reggie Johnson, all get more money and draw a bigger crowd by going to Lousiana casinos than fighting in the city.

Juan Diaz gets a better reception and bigger crowd in San Antonio than he does in Houston. Promoters even prefer El Paso or Corpus Christi over Houston.

If you are just now hearing about Hylon Williams, then I'd say you dont exactly have your fingers on the pulse of Houston boxing. But it isnt you to blame, it is again marketing and the faults of the city. Hylon fought in the U.S. finals box-off on the last day of the trials with an Olympic berth at stake, and there was nearly nobody in attendence. And it was FREE admission. Also, Hylon did not go to Colorodo to train, since he is a senior in HS, and is not an alternate.

The gym you are referring to is Ray's Gym (Ray Ontiveros), where Rocky trained as an amateur and for most of his career. But he has not trained for his last 3 fights there.
