Julio was a two time champion even if for a short time. Antonio didn't even accomplish that. I remember Antonio doing a little dance seconds before Shane fucking smoked him.::
Hard to say. Both beat decent guys but neither beat elite fighters. I'm mentioning the tittles Julio won because they were some type of achievements. The same overrated Margarito fucking smoked Antonio. as far as skill, Julio was always a more complete fighter.
Margarito Beat Antonio a Bit AFTER Sugar Shane SMOKED him 1st... Antonio Beat Cory Spinks, Mickey Ward & Ivan Robinson...All Relatively DECISIVELY...Can Julio's Resume REALLY Match that, in Terms of WINS???:dunno: ... agREED that Julio was More GIFTED, but those Superior Gifts DIDN'T Make him a Better Fighter than his Brother, in REED's Opinion... REED
Theres no shame in getting smoked by a prime Mosley. Its alot better than damn near getting killed by a single right hand from Pollo Valenzuela. WHOlio is, and has always been shit. Ive said it all along, but some ppl didnt listen.
Shit, they're almost the exact same fighter. Neither are shit. They're quality gatekeeper types and both were somewhat fun to watch. I thought they were both going to be better then they actually turned out to be though.
It's tough to say. Antonio put himself in better position for notable fights, but had the misfortune of having to step up to 147 rather than getting the top players at 140 to give him a shot. He was a fish out of water @ 147, where Shane and Margarito had their way with him (not that he was ever beating either, regardless) His win over Micky Ward might be his best accomplishment, since I thought he was lucky to escape with the decision against Cory Spinks (who otherwise would be his biggest achievement strictly from a w/l perspective). Julio's would have been the Manfredy fight if the judges weren't paid to score otherwise. Absolutely terrible decision, one that Top Rank to this day insists the fix was in (though it honestly doesn't take much to draw shitty officiating in Texas). I wouldn't argue against having them ranked about the same. Their best performances came against used-up fighters - Ricky Quiles was at about the same point as a lightweight when Julio won as Micky Ward was when Antonio beat him. Jesus Chavez was a shell of his former self, and Ivan Robinson had gotten all of the mileage he could out of the two Gatti fights, already looking like a fighter on the slide by the time Antonio got to him (not to mention, Ivan was featherfisted at 135, never mind moving up 5 lb.) I guess I'd give it to Antonio, who at least overachieved. Julio was perceived to be the more talented of the two, which makes it unforgivable that this is even a debate.
I'd say about even. Both are OK, nothing special. Like Jake said, Antonio is somewhat of an overachiever, he did more with his limited talented than Julio did with his slightly greater talent. To be honest, hands up, until this thread I had no idea they were brothers ::
getting caught with a single shot from anyone can happen to anybody. Antonio started dancing when MOsley caught his ass. What kind of stupid shit was that?:dunno: :: Maybe Mosley was gonna catch him anyways. But the way he went out was pretty silly.
I guess Manfredy-Diaz was a bad decision; but I've always thought it was a much closer fight than most thought...Diaz was punching at Manfredy's gloves ALL NIGHT. That, plus the two point deductions... Julio has never adjusted well to solve for that kind of tight guard. It's pretty much even, really.
antonio diaz got a gift against spinks. I can't give him the nod based on that. or his domination of club fighter/irish punching bag ward.
But WHAT has Julio Done, by Comparison???... Sure, Antonio's BEST Wins AIN'T Much, but they're BETTER than his Brothers... REED
Good point. It's tempting to pick Julio because of the titles he's won and his greater longevity, but closer examination reveals that Antanio probably beat the better fighters and in his heyday (however brief) may have been the better fighter than Julio ever was, although possibly not by much. The funny part is, there was a time long ago (around the time when Antonio was beating Mickey Ward and Julio was getting flattened by Valenzuela) when EVERYONE considered Antonio the better fighter hands down. :dunno:
Julio is the better skilled fighter but never rose to the level annointed him and seems to crumble under pressure as evidenced by the big time fights he has had (Manfedy, Castillo and Diaz) Antonio was the grittier of the two and made the most of the skillset he had. He wasn't as fluied as Julio in the ring but made up for it with raw determination.
Antonio sufffered very bad beatings from Shane and Margarito, I recall that much about him. I met him briefly in San Antonio and talked with him and Julio and Lee Espinoza, nice cats. Poor Julio must have felt as if he was being hit by four men last Saturday, from all angles.
I don't knock Antonio for losing to a prime Shane. But I can't fucking forget him dancing the moment Shane smoked him. Like he didn't have enough on his plate to deal with Shane. He had to start clowning. :dunno:
Julio by a hard based on his being able to not only gain a crown but gain it again. His wins were less controversial as IMO Tono lost to Spinks. Julio at the very least was able to hold his own against both Castillo and Juan before succumbing to the better fighter. its close but Julio IMO. Tono has the bigger heart though. Combine the two and you have a great fighter
