Vargas-Tito?????? AT the time, it made a little sense, but Fernando couldve made 2-3 big paydays before he took a superbout. In retrospect we see that it was a huge error. ________ Black live
Terrible example. Vargas was undefeated and generally considered to be in his prime. Tito had shown vulnerability in both the De La Hoya and David Reid fights. That was the right fight for Nando at the time...and it was a winnable fight for him, on paper. Tito was just the better fighter.
you gotta think, Ali was so so confident, plus he kinda taught Holmes a lot and used him for sparring, I feel it was a case of a master feeling he can always beat the student but realistically, Holmes was a great fighter also and Ali was shot
Yep. Ali was the very definition of "shot". In fact I wont be surprised to find out that the term was coined after that particular fight. ::
For me it was Marvious Frazier-Tyson But.. I think he KNEW he couldn't win.. I feel it was jacked up for Joe to put him in there with Tyson, granted he got a payday but at what cost? if he thought he could have a career, it's not a good move to get thrown in with the wolves so early and get dominated
Spinks-Tyson as well. This is the truth: When I analyzed that fight beforehand I simple couldn't envision any scenario which had Spinks seeing the second round. Serious!
you know what though Sly.. I have this on tape and watch it every once in a while.. what is amazing is that our perpspective is so different now.. at the time of the fight, they polled a bunch of fighters, writers, sports casters.. it was about 50-50 and actually Spinks was favored in polls to beat Tyson, Tyson they kept saying was a young great looking prospect but was not ready for Spinks.. not enough experience and had not fought good enough fighters ::
I remember at least 80% of people picking Tyson. Closer to 90%. When it came out that Spinks would have to wear braces on both knees, a ton of money came in on Tyson.
On the flipside, if Joe was dumb enough to take a rematch with Foreman, why wouldn't he be dumb enough to have his son face Tyson?
They didn't know that Spinks would pull a bitch move though.:dunno: Poor f*cker sh*t himself in the locker room before coming out. Gotta hand it to Tyson, he could get inside your head unless your name was Holyfield or Douglas.
Yep. I don't recall LOK's scenario at all. I don't remember too many folks picking Tyson. Tyson was more active against better competition than Spinks and was defeating the fighters that Spinks was avoiding. When Tyson beat Berbick to win his first alphabet title I remember Spinks having some support...but by the time the fight actually happened, most picked Tyson to win. What happened in that fight wasn't much of a surprise.
Ali crashed his weight with thyroid pills. He had his hair dyed black and looked to be in fantastic shape, physique-wise he looked incredible like he did in the early 70's. Once the bell rang, it was obvious he was a spent force and his look was synthetic.
if you have the tape, I just watched it not long ago.. it was billed "once and for all" or something cheesy like that.. They interviewd everyone there and more people were for Spinks than Tyson.. no question. Tyson was a "kid" or "prospect" and Spinks was looked to have too much experience and be on a higher level ::
I'm sure some of them were doing it for "hype" no doubt.. but many just felt that Spinks was a great fighter and Mike was out of his league
Before the pay-per-view between Holyfield and Akinwande (who had already lost embarrassingly to Lennox Lewis) was aborted, Boxing Weekly did an article where they had 10 experts saying that Holyfield would win and 10 experts saying that Akinwande would win. It started off with Bobby Czyz sayind that Akinwande would outpoint Holyfield.
Akinwande actually did have the size, reach and style to give Holyfield a decent fight. Holyfield had problems with much taller fighters. Whether Akinwande had the mental toughness to hang in there was a different story if the Lewis fight is anything to go by.
I forget who said it, but he said Howard Cosell was jacked up because of how Muhammad looked physically. This guy said he told Howard that not only would Muhammad not win a round, he wouldn't win 10 seconds of any round which turned out to be true. I couldn't believe the fight lasted as long as it did. I'd love to see the punchstat numbers. I'd be shocked if Ali threw more than 100 punches.
I'd be shocked if Ali threw more than 50! I just recall him standing there and being hit. Of course I haven't EVER rewatched the fight since seeing it live back in 1980...
What was Foreman thinking when he said.. "this night the referee will be the most important man in the ring other than the fighters" umm George there are only 3 people in the ring so if he's the most important man other than the fighters doesn't that make him the LEAST important man in the ring? ::
This post is overkill. In you actually attempting to explain why what Foreman said is funny/dumb...you actually look as bad as he did. ::
I'll never forget hearing DJ's talk about the fight the next morning then dedicating Teddy Pendergrass's "Love TKO" to Ali. :: (FYI, that was before Teddy had the car accident)
brewster - golata after seeing him get blasted by lewis then quitting against tyson, why throw that pussy in against another puncher?
