No, but AVENGING a Loss (Or @ Least TRYING) is a CLEARER Path to "Greatness" than AVOIDING your Conqueror Altogether...

Case in Point, People STILL Debate the "Greatness" of Kostya Tsyzu, to this VERY DAY...

We're going waaaay into the hypothetical here. Taylor might go on to have a great career. He's not the first fighter to suffer a knockout loss, you know. He's never been dominated by an opponent, and he's still pretty talented. He made a mistake, and maybe he'll learn from it.
But Tszyu's had a borderline career on top of being knocked out. No one gets on Alexis Arguello's case for losing to Marcel, or doubts Barrera's greatness because he lost to Junior Jones and didn't do enough in the immediate rematch.

Alexis Arguello Won Titles @ HOW MANY Different Weights Again???...Barrera???...@ Least Marco Fought Junior Jones AGAIN...

1 of the BIGGEST Knocks on Kostya is the Way he "Handled" his Loss to Vince Phillips...

What makes you think Taylor can clean up and dominate 168 and 175 when he didn't even come close to doing it at 160?

I'm with REED on this - a rematch is necessary, but an immediate rematch isn't. Though that said, I still applaud Jermain for enforcing the rematch. It's almost as if he called Pavlik's bluff, or at least Pavlik's handlers, who were 99.9% certain he wasn't taking the rematch. That's why they leaked out the news of the Duddy fight supposedly being next.

Where did I say he would? Where did I say he could beat Pavlik in a rematch?

There are plenty of ways to have a great career that don't include beating a guy who beat you.

to refer to a scenario as "easy" is suggesting that it can easily happen, no?

or were you just spitballing, with that post?

    likely scenarios for taylor's future:

    1. get KOed by Pavlik, then lose to a mediocre guy at 168

    2. get KOed by Pavlik, then lose to a good fighter at 168.

I was referring to Reed's 'BOATLOAD' language.
It doesn't take a "boatload of hypotheticals".

Those were two 'easy' hypotheticals that show Taylor doesn't necessarily need Pavlik.

Nothing is 'easy' about having a great career.

REED is right, he needs a confidence builder first. I still think Forrest would have beat Mayorga in the second fight if he would have taken a tune up beforehand and got his confidence back.

With that said. Taylor had a small chance to beat Pavlik, he missed it. Pavlik won't let that window open again.:nono:

If he had a career like Barrera or Arguello, the loss to Tszyu wouldn't be an issue. Jack Johnson never avenged his knockout loss to Joe Choynski. Max Schmeling didn't avenge his TKO losses to Diekman, Gaines or Daniels.

Mike Tyson sure as hell didn't handle his loss to Buster Douglas any better than Tszyu handled his loss to Phillips.

Buster Took a DIVE in his Next Fight after Tyson (vs. Holyfield) & was NEVER EVER a Factor in the Heavyweight Division Again...

Vince Phillips Actually DEFENDED the Title he Took from Tsyzu a FEW Times & DESPERATELY TRIED to Give Tsyzu a RE (even Offering to Go to Australia, just to Make it Happen),to No Avail...

After Losing, Phillips Took a Hiatus & REestablished Himself as @ Least a DECENT Contender @ 140...STILL, Kostya wanted NO Parts of him...

    BIG Difference....

    "Cleaning Up & Dominating" 168 & 175 Consists of a BOATLOAD of Hypotheticals...MORE than 2, Certainly...

    1. Jermain Beating Calzaghe
    2. Jermain Beating Kessler
    3. Jermain Beating Miranda
    4. Jermain Beating Lacy
    5. Jermain Beating Green
    6. Jermain Beating Mundine
    7. Jermain Beating Dawson
    8. Jermain Beating Hopkins
    9. Jermain Beating Tarver

Jermain would NEED to Accomplish @ LEAST 4-5 of these Feats, to Make "Greatness" a Possibility...

    Again, a "Boatload" of Hypotheticals...

He leaned forward while throwing the uppercut. Holyfield capitalized on it. If Tyson's team had done its homework and Tyson wasn't such a dumbass, he would have, too. Douglas had bitch titties in most of his fights. If that fight had taken place today, the commentators would have been saying, "It's good that Douglas hasn't overtrained himself, getting all that extra fat off." 246 is practically svelte in today's era. Could you imagine the much shorter Samuel Peter getting down to 246? All of Wlad's nuthuggers (who nuthug Peter to make Wlad look better) would be talking about how he was in great shape.

But yeah. He made $26 million against Holyfield, $3 million to throw a fake punch in the WWF, and god knows how many million for that stupid video game of his. Can you believe that people were buying that, and tossing out Mike Tyson's Punch Out?!?!? He didn't take a dive, but with $10 million sitting on the table (Uncle Sam and Don King each take a third), he might have quit a little quickly.

    Buster got robbed big time.

Several years back he told Howard Stern that after taxes and his management etc took their cut, he took home "about" 1 million dollars.

It Wasn't a "Dive" In the Sense that Douglas Could have WON ,yet Elected to LOSE...But it WAS a "Dive" in the Sense that Douglas FOUND a Cushy Spot on the Canvas to Get Counted Out...

After Holy Dropped him, Buster Wiped his Nose w/his Glove Several Times (Appearing to B Looking for BLOOD or SNOT), then Literally PLAYED DEAD & was Counted Out...

    PATHETIC "Effort"...

    Correct!

I don't think he can beat Pavlik but he has to try. Pavlik has his number and his confidence will be even greater, Jermaine is toast.

It is the whole picture Mike. Taylor really has not beat anyone in a convincing fashion. Then he loses to Pavlik. Sly is correct IMO.

We might be getting somewhere, finally.

Add, #10. Kelly Pavlik to your list. Now, what will it take to make "Greatness" a possibility? Beating 4-5 of the others is one way. Is beating Pavlik and 2 of the others another? Is just beating Pavlik?

What if Taylor loses to one of them, but avenges it? Still need Pavlik?

Look, I'm not saying beating Pavlik wouldn't be important or a lot of help to his career, but in no way is it necessary for a great career.

Referring to Tszyu...avenging his Phillips loss would have helped his career because he doesn't have the trophy scalps on his resume to make up for it. Of course, once Vince fell apart (which was pretty soon after), beating him would have meant a lot less for Tszyu. Which is why I mentioned that scenario (Pavlik losing to someone else) as a way it wouldn't be as important for Taylor's career.
