The orthodox and predictable (yet extremely effective) style of Monzon against the speed, power and unorthodox style of Roy Jones. Even though both fighters had vastly different styles, they were both masters of setting the tempo of the fight in their favor. Even when you would win round against them, you seemingly still had to do it on their "terms". I think it turn out to be a very interesting fight, or just as easily a real bore. How does it play out?
My response is predictable, but I can't pick any fighter against Roy Jones in either the 160lbs or 168lbs divisions... Jones by decision
i'd give monzon with his hard jab and height a good chance. rjj's speed would certainly be a factor but if monzon could manage to push rjj back he could win.
Monzon may have a good chance given his unorthodox yet supremely awkwardly effective style.... But I have to go with Jones Jr. here, by decision in an awkward, kind of ugly fight. Just too fast with footwork that is too good. Monzon is disruptive with his long jab and ability to impose his rhythm and physicality - and that helps him keep Jones Jr. at bay for large stretches... But ultimately he finds it hard to deal with and adapt to Roy's speed, footwork and reflexes...and I think Jones' lead left hook is a key weapon here. To me it ends up looking like a closer, much more competitive version of Jones-Harding. Jones by clear decision. Peace.
That's one of the reasons i lean towards Jones as well. If Monzon did make any mistakes, it was extending his right hand and leaving it out too long. I can see Roy capitalizing on that often.
I tend to think that this one could play out similar to Jones Hopkins. I dont think Monzon's offence would push Jones in to track meet mode but I also think hed put enough pressure on and use his 'lazy' left hook well to get Jones' respect.
I think I'm in the minority in this one, but who exactly did Jones beat at 160? To me it is a matter of distance. I think if it is a 12 round fight Jones would be able to win enough rounds early and stink it up late to win a close but clear decision, but in a 15 round fight I think Monzon has enough rounds to slow him down and take over the later stages of the fight to force a close decision his favor.
Hopkins was making his pro debut, and never put on a pair of boxing gloves before until an hour prior to the fight.
I think its clear Hopkins style has evolved and he has become a much better fighter since his clash with Roy. He wasn't "green" persay, but he has changed drastically. I think Roy's speed may be too much here, but Monzon isn't getting blown out or outclassed by anyone. Roy SD 15 or 12
