Sorry if this thread has been done recently or that it's extra repetitive.
List who you think are the ten most gifted, talented, skillful, multi dimensional fighters ever.
It's a very subjective list and there're no wrong answers so if you want to include Arturo Gatti, do so (just better make sure you can justify it!!!!! ) but your list is LIMITED to TEN and only TEN (no honorable mentions)

    1.Roy Jones Jnr
    2.Cassius Marcellus Clay
    3.Walker Smith
    4.Floyd Mayweather Jnr
    5.Pernell Whitaker
    6.Bernard Hopkins
    7.Sugar Ray Leonard
    8.Michael Nunn
    9.Roberto Duran
    10.Lennox Lewis (honestly)

so in other words, you have a favorite "style" of boxing, and have mistaken it for "talent and skill?"

yeah. and take a guy like Monzon, or Pedroza. Both those guys would be considered highly intelligent fighters, but not necessarily the most talented.

likewise, Mel Taylor was very talented, but not the smartest fighter there ever was.

Sure, he's "Intelligent", but Not on that GENUIS Level in REED's Opinion...

N REED's Opinion, James Toney is even MORE Intelligent In the Ring than Bernard, yet REED DIDN'T put Toney on his List Either...

Probably not in a fit state to name ten right now [a little puggled], but Monzon would certainly be among my eventual picks...

REED THOUGHT of Listing Pep, but Honestly HASN'T Seen Enough of him to JUSTIFY it...

The Only Pep Fights that REED has on Tape R the Saddler Bouts...Needless to Say, he DIDN'T Really look like a "Pugilistic Genuis" in those...

As REED correctly said, they all have a different style.

But a better list than that you could not produce!

there's a big difference between a genius/pugilistic scientist....and a fighter that is 'gifted' and 'talented'

i could say hopkins is a scientist and zab judah is gifted and talented...yet they'd end up on the same list here

Your Logic is FAULTY because Zab's "Gifts & Talents" have YET to Help him in his BIGGEST Fights...

OBVIOUSLY, to Reach the "Genuis" Level, a VERY HIGH Degree of Pugilistic SUCCESS is Required...A Level that Zab will NEVER Reach...

If you are going to include Hopkins, which I wouldn't, then you should have John Ruiz at #1. Like Hopkins, he doesn't have any special abilities except winning. Unlike Hopkins, he barely has average abilities in some areas.

Any list of this kind without Mike McCallum is remiss. :nono:

Likewise for Finito Lopez, Hopkins, Mayweather and Sanchez.

Don't see how people could argue AGAINST Hops...it's not about looking pretty, it's about being multi-faceted and able to adapt, adjust, think and change tactics...and be technically well-rounded.

    Peace.

    And btw...

    I'd include (not yet mentioned):

    Ezzard Charles

    Archie Moore

    Sugar Ray Robinson

    Jose Napoles

    Carlos Ortiz

    Miguel Canto

    Peace.

Fraud is no genius, especially DEFENSIVELY, it has been proven that he has NO PLAN B.

Against a hardnose pressure fighter like Jose Luis Castillo for example, the referee took points away for his vital and fundamental illegal defensive impliments such as Forearms to the throat or palming of the head to keep fighters away, once that happenned, it seemed to unravel Fraud completely, his style was as a consequence, seemingly rendered obsolete, and Castillo swept the final rounds. In the rematch Fraud stunk the joint out by ruinning like a bitch, and that aint clever, Smoke Gainer, Felix Sturm and Corey Spinks can do that.

The shoulder roll should be illegal, and it doesn't take a genius to twist your back and rest your head on your balls before clinching .

Fraud has impressive accuracey and timing, but then again, so did the significantly slower Kostya Tszyu, whom NOBODY :crafty: will be putting anywhere near this list.

It's not about being multi-faceted or any of the other things you bring in.

It's about "most gifted, talented, skillful, multi dimensional fighters ever."

That pretty much is about 'looking pretty.' It doesn't mean Hopkins couldn't be better than the guys on the list.

With those criteria, Hopkins doesn't belong in any discussion about the top of the list unless it's for how he contrasts with the guys who belong at the top.

Gifted? Nope. Talented? Nope. Skillful? Yes. Multi-dimensional? Nope.
